BCCI Stands Firm: Gambhir to Remain Head Coach Regardless of 0-5 England Defeat
5 months ago | 5 Views
Gautam Gambhir is about to turn a year since he was named India's head coach. After a fantastic career that saw him lead India to victory in the T20 World Cup in the West Indies, Rahul Dravid retired on June 29 of last year, leaving the position open for Gambhir to take over. With Ricky Ponting's candidacy being rejected by the BCCI and VVS Laxman declining the position, Gambhir, the obvious choice, formally joined on July 9, beginning a new journey and signaling a new chapter for Indian cricket. Gambhir had previously coached the Kolkata Knight Riders to IPL victory during his two World Cup victories.
However, Gambhir's debut has been lackluster, at least a year after it occurred. India did win the ICC Champions Trophy in March, but their comeback in Test cricket is, for the most part, lacking. Gambhir's leadership has seen India win only three of the eleven Tests they have played, including two against Bangladesh and one against Australia. They are currently behind 0-1 in England. The notion of split coaching has arisen from Gambhir's inability to produce results. The idea is that Gambhir would concentrate on T20Is and ODIs, while someone like Laxman would be in charge of the Test team.
But there's a catch, though. The notion of anything divided – be it coaching or captaincy – has never sat well with the BCCI or its leaders. Even when Virat Kohli relinquished the T20I captaincy in 2021, there was no discussion of a split captaincy. Suryakumar Yadav is indeed leading India's T20I squad, but that's only because he isn't deserving of a spot in India's ODI lineup at this time. Therefore, Gambhir is subject to the same reasoning. Gambhir's position as coach, which lasts through the 2027 World Cup, is in no way threatened; in fact, even if India are utterly destroyed in England, including the possibility of a 0-5 whitewash, Gambhir will still be the coach.
"Currently, Gambhir is doing a good job with a young squad. When you're in transition, the outcome isn't always what you expect. During their transitions, both Australia and England had challenges. Therefore, it's too soon to make a judgment about Gambhir. We are optimistic that we can change things around, and we still have four Test matches in England. We'll see after that. A BCCI representative informed InsideSport that Gambhir has the board's complete confidence.
Gautam Gambhir's future
During his tenure as India coach, Gambhir has seen plenty of upheaval. Before Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli declared their retirements from Test cricket, dressing room talks were leaked to the public after India squandered the Border-Gavaskar Trophy by losing 1-3 in Australia. Some members of the public believe that the pair was compelled to retire due to their terrible, lingering forms, even though they chose to do so voluntarily. Not long before their judgments, Rohit stated in an interview to Michael Clarke that he was excited about touring England, and Kohli informed his Delhi coach Sarandeep Singh that he wanted to "score 3-4 centuries," giving the conspiracy more momentum.
Gambhir still has a ways to go. West Indies, South Africa, and then a difficult away Test series in New Zealand are the opponents India faces after England, all of which put his skills as India's head coach to the test.
