June 27, India Amid the hype surrounding the 2025 NBA draught, Los Angeles Lakers sharpshooter Austin Reaves has officially turned down the team's maximum extension offer. Over the course of the following four seasons, the agreement would have brought him an astounding $89.2 million. Reaves has chosen to be patient for his next extension, despite still being eligible for the significant salary increase this offseason. The Athletic said that after going undrafted a few years ago, the Los Angeles Lakers signed him.
Now 27, the player has one year left on his contract with the club, followed by an option in 2026–27.
The player turned down the maximum extension this week, according to league officials who spoke with The Athletic. He is currently focused on beginning the third year of the four-year, $54 million deal he signed in 2023 as a restricted free agent.
Taking into account the restrictions on the amount, insiders informed the news agency that Reaves' choice was a "foregone conclusion" and not a sign of his connection with the team.
At the age of 27, he may consider rejecting the player option in the future and opt for open free agency. With the new agreement, he may be able to profit from a larger sum.
It has been said that his choice is solely motivated by money and will allow him to earn more money in the future.
According to reports, his name was mentioned in rumors both during the first day of the 2025 NBA Draft due to the possibility that he might soon become a free agent. The Lakers have valued Austin Reaves highly and have not expressed any interest in trading him.
According to CBS Sports, Reaves had an average of 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.7 made 3-pointers each game throughout the previous season.
He made 46% of his field goals and 38% of his 3-pointers. His scoring and assist averages have continued to rise year after year since he joined the Lakers.
In 2021, he was not selected for the draft after finishing high school in Oklahoma. He then signed the $54 million extension for four years in 2023.
The second round will be held on Thursday, June 26, following the first round on Wednesday.
He has played with the Lakers throughout his four years in the league.
He has never won a title in his career.
