On the second day of the Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, Tejaswin Shankar, who won silver at the Asian Games, nearly won gold in the decathlon, while India's mixed 4x400m relay team delivered a commanding performance to retain the championship.

Although Tejaswin (7,618 points) put up a strong battle against China's Fei Xiang (7,634), he ultimately lost by 16 points and came in second. Tuesday saw the conclusion of the competition after two arduous days with the tenth and final event, the 1500 meters. Tejaswin's timing (4:37.99) wasn't enough to make up the difference with Fei. Keisuke Okuda of Japan came in third place with 7602 points.

"Gold and silver differed by 16 points. The difference between bronze and silver is 16 points. It was that near. Tejaswin said, "In these championship competitions, all you want to do is give it your all to win a medal for the nation, and I'm delighted that I was able to do that."

India's athletes won six medals, making it a successful day for the country. The fireworks were provided by the 4x400m mixed relay team of Rupal Chaudhary, Santhosh Kumar, Vishal TK, and Subha Venkatesan, who won the competition. The Indian team led the competition from beginning to end, finishing with a time of 3:18.12 seconds. China came in second, far behind, with a time of 3:20.52, and Sri Lanka came in third with a time of 3:21.95.

With a time of 52.68 seconds, Rupal also won silver in the women's 400 meters. Praveen Chithravel, a triple jumper, came in second with a best jump of 16.90 meters. In the women's 1500 meter race, Pooja took silver with a time of 4:10.83. Yoonus Shah took bronze in the men's 1,500 meter race with a time of 3:43.03 seconds.

At the continental tournament, Tejaswin took home consecutive medals in the decathlon. In the 2023 edition, he won a bronze medal. He broke the national record with 7666 points at the Hangzhou Asian Games that year. Tejaswin was in the lead in Sumi after the first day's five events (100 m, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400 m), but he fell behind on Wednesday. He has had difficulty with the pole vault and javelin throw.

On the first day, I achieved my personal best in the shot put with 13.79 meters. As I was having a lot of trouble with the first two throws, I was able to muster all my strength in the third. That shifted the course. I continued my good work today with another PB in the 110m hurdles (14.58 seconds).

"On the first day, I have my strong events and take the lead. However, since I know that the next day I still have the pole vault and javelin, I am never carried away. It's a work in progress, and over time, I will get better at it.

Vishal TK had to settle for fourth position despite his personal best time of 45.57 seconds in the men's 400-meter race.

Shaili Singh (6.17m) and Ancy Sojan (6.14m), two female long jumpers, made it to the finals.

After coming in third in her heat with a time of 13.18 seconds, Jyothi Yarraji advanced to the final of the 100-meter hurdles.
