Ashwin on Pant’s Celebration: ‘Skip the Flips, Focus on the Game’

Rishabh Pant has been advised by famous Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to refrain from performing his signature front flip celebration after hitting a century. The wicketkeeper-batter hit two centuries in the Leeds Test against England, and he captivated the Headingley crowd by performing a somersault to mark his first innings hundred. But in the second innings, he didn't repeat the same celebration even when legendary Sunil Gavaskar requested it from the audience; instead, he went for a different one.

But in Tests, Ashwin asked Pant to refrain from using his now well-known front flip. As one of the finest batters in the lineup, he said he has nothing to demonstrate.

"I only have one request: please don't perform that front flip. In Tests, your body gets fatigued, unlike IPL, when you won't play more than 50–60 balls. He is a legitimate top batter in the Indian lineup. Therefore, Ashwin stated on his YouTube account, "He has nothing to establish."

After Andy Flower, he became the second wicketkeeper in cricket history to hit centuries in both innings of a Test match.

Following his century for Lucknow Super Giants in their final game of IPL 2025, the wicketkeeper performed a similar celebration.

In the first innings against England in Leeds, Pant, on the other hand, scored his century in typical fashion, hitting a high six off Shoaib Bashir while at 99. He took a step forward and smashed a lofted delivery into the stands to reach his century. The event was equally dramatic, with the helmet off, the bat and gloves dropped, and then an amazing front flip that astounded the Leeds crowd.

During the first Test, Pant spoke candidly about his somersault celebration to his former teammate Cheteshwar Pujara, telling him that he had received gymnastics training in school.

"I was considering three parties. "Let the bat do the talking" was one of them. After that, I decided to stay with mine. Since I was a kid, I've been doing it (the somersault). "During school, I trained in gymnastics," he stated during a conversation on Sony Sports.

"I participated in gymnastics in school. I'm really familiar with it. I can somersault even if you wake me up in the middle of the night. I had to put even more effort into it after the accident. However, I made the effort, and now it's simple for me again, he said.
