Ashwin Sanctioned After Angry Reaction Toward Umpires in TNPL Clash

After declaring his retirement from international cricket, veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is not enjoying himself on the cricket field. According to reports, Ashwin, who had a mediocre IPL season for the Chennai Super Kings with both bat and ball, was penalized for violating a code of conduct during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) game between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on Sunday (June 8) at the Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science Cricket Ground in Coimbatore.
After the match referee, Arjun Kripal Singh, determined that Ashwin, the captain of Dindigul, was guilty of two offenses—misusing equipment and displaying disagreement with the umpires—he was penalized 30% of his match fees. "The match referee held a hearing following the game," a TNPL official informed Cricbuzz. "Ashwin received a 10% fine for expressing dissent towards the umpires and a 20% fine for abusing the equipment. He submitted to the penalties."
In the penultimate delivery of the fifth over, Ashwin was seen engaged in a furious dispute with umpire Kritika after being adjudged lbw off the bowling of his rival in Tiruppur Tamizhans, R Sai Kishore. Sai Kishore threw one up on the pads, enticing Ashwin to go for the big shot. The right-hander, who chose to start the game, swung hard but was unable to make contact. Despite the ball appearing to have bounced outside the leg stump, the umpire raised her finger, much to Ashwin's chagrin.
Didigul had previously used all of their reviews on failed wide-ball referrals, so Ashwin was unable to utilize DRS. The 38-year-old man approached the umpire and whispered a few words. He kept asking the umpires for an explanation, but they didn't think they had to answer.
Ashwin, enraged by the turn of events, stormed off the field. He chucked his gloves in the air only inches from the dugout as he walked back to the pavilion, smashing the bat on his pads. Ashwin continued to yell at the umpires from the dugout, but his display of opposition did not end there. He uses extremely forceful body and hand gestures.
With two boundaries and a six, Ashwin began the Dindigul Dragons' innings with a quick 18 runs off 11 deliveries. However, his dismissal in the fifth over at 39/1 sparked a stunning collapse, with Dindigul losing their last nine wickets for only 54 runs and falling to 93 all out in 16.2 overs.
The small target posed no problem for the Tiruppur Tamizhans. With 49 balls remaining, wicketkeeper-batter Tushar Raheja secured a commanding nine-wicket victory by anchoring the chase with an undefeated 65.
With this decisive win, Tiruppur established their supremacy, but Dindigul fell to fifth position in the TNPL rankings after winning one and losing one of their two games. The Tamil Nadu Premier League, now in its ninth edition, began on June 6 and will continue until July 6.
With disciplined spells, Tiruppur's bowlers, as a group, performed exceptionally well in bringing down Dindigul's batting order. With amazing numbers, Esakkimuthu led the charge, taking four wickets, and Sai Kishore grabbed two. As just three batters could reach double digits, Shivam stood out as Dindigul's sole significant offensive contributor with 30 runs.
Chennai Super Kings, where Ashwin began his IPL career in 2009, had a dismal IPL 2025 season. In nine games, he only managed to take seven wickets and score 33 runs, and he was even left out of the starting lineup for a few contests.
