Ashwin Praises Bumrah: ‘Jassi’s Impact Greater Than Many Indian Batters’
5 months ago | 5 Views
With 150 Test wickets taken in the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) nations, Jasprit Bumrah is the sole Asian cricketer to achieve this feat. He has left behind some of the all-time greats, including Waqar Younis, Muttiah Muralitharan, Anil Kumble, and Wasim Akram. It's nearly hard to fathom what more he can accomplish with the ball when you consider that, even with workload management, he still has a lot of cricket left in him. To the question, "Is Bumrah the greatest among the greats?" you give a silent nod, similar to that of former England pacer Steve Finn.
Jasprit Bumrah is, in Ravichandran Ashwin's opinion, "one of the greatest to have played in his era," but he is not a fan of "marketing" a certain player.
I've lauded him extensively. However, I will not say the word you used. But the fact is, he's amazing. All I want to leave is that. He entered this world. All of this turns into a soap opera. I'm not one of those dramatic actors. I don't want to promote anybody. When asked if every other cricketer in the world secretly wishes Bumrah were a member of their team, Ashwin responded on his YouTube channel, "But he is a fantastic cricketer."
Prior to that, Ashwin did not hesitate to rate Bumrah as "above" many Indian batsmen. The previous all-rounder for India went so far as to say that Bumrah's elevation isn't on par with that of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, or Rohit Sharma.
"I sincerely hope that we take that path (in treating Bumrah with the same respect as Tendulkar and Kohli). I continue to maintain that we don't treat Jassi in the same way that we treat Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, or Sachin Tendulkar. Certainly more than what a bowler typically has. He commands respect. He has a huge following. Many individuals adore him. I consider him to be my greatest supporter. Perhaps his wife may be the best contender for the position. Ashwin stated, "I'm his biggest fan."
Ashwin said, "Bumrah is superior than the majority of Indian hitters."
The extreme skill of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Sachin Tendulkar as hitters is well known. Perhaps Bumrah is the only Indian fast bowler who would be included in the top half of the list, although some may legitimately argue that Tendulkar and Kohli would be worthy representatives of India on the list of the greatest cricketers of all time. He is an excellent bowler, and in general, a bowler of his caliber would not receive the same level of recognition as a batsman of comparable skill.
To support his argument, Ashwin cited the deliveries Bumrah made in the first innings of the Headingley Test to remove former captain Joe Root and England opener Zak Crawley.
"He's on a different pedestal. He is in a different universe. The issue is that the specialness of his deed is irrelevant. It's all about how well things are done. What are his methods? The manner in which he tormented Joe Root in the first innings, accurately. The length was beyond Joe Root's comprehension. The ball was a bit distant. He would have hit it to third man and played the other bowlers in the back foot. But not to Bumrah.
"He came forward. Because he was worried about the ball nipping back in. And he didn't pick the length. He chased it a little. It went in the slip. He is just a fabulous bowler. The ball of Zak Crawley in the first innings, how many can he bowl that? He is almost past the vertical. From there, he dropped it in the middle stump. He has taken that out. That needs great awareness, great wrist position, quality execution and an unbelievable amount of work to try and keep his body in that shape to do this," Ashwin added.
Bumrah, who has already picked up 210 wickets at an unbelievable average of 19.60 - the lowest among all bowlers to have taken more than 200 Test wickets, is in a league of his own.
"He is on a different plane altogether. And I would be very proud to say I played with Jassi. I batted against Jassi. I was in a team with Jassi. And I have seen some fabulous victories. And I have played together with him. He is one of the legends. He is right up there. If not, better than some of the batters in our country."
