Ashwin, Dindigul Dragons Cleared as Ball-Tampering Claims Lack Substance

On Tuesday, former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and his franchise, the Dindigul Dragons, in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) found out the results of the ball-tampering charges brought against them by the Siechem Madurai Panthers. A Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) investigation exonerated the Dragons of the accusations.

The dispute began when the Panthers alleged that the Dragons' towels used in the TNPL match on June 14 at the Salem Cricket Foundation Ground were "treated with chemicals" to manipulate the ball. Panthers CEO Mahesh S called for an inquiry into the issue after alleging "blatant ball tampering" following the Dindigul Dragons' nine-wicket victory in the run chase.

However, TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan affirmed that there was no misconduct after the investigation committee uncovered no credible evidence against the Dragons. Kannan stated in his statement on the inquiry, "The towels in question were TNCA-issued and equally available to both teams." The Playing Control Team, which comprised the match referee and on-field umpires, retained complete control of the ball during the entire contest. There were no issues during the play, and no verifiable proof has been presented. The assertions seem to be made after the fact and to be speculative in nature.

The Panthers, however, were instructed to provide any credible evidence by 3 PM on June 17 to back up their assertion, but no such evidence has been sought up to this point.

The towels used by the Dragons, according to the TNCA, were supervised by the on-field umpires and were employed to dry the ball during wet outfield circumstances brought on by dew.

Despite going wicketless for 27 runs in four overs against the Panthers, Ashwin compensated for his batting performance by scoring a blistering 49 to complete the 151-run chase in only 12.3 overs.

The defending champions, Dragons, have won two of their three games so far this year.
