Arjun Erigaisi Surpasses D Gukesh to Claim India’s Top Spot in FIDE Chess Rankings

The most recent FIDE rankings show that Arjun Erigaisi has surpassed D Gukesh to become India's new No. 1. With 2776 Elo rating points, Erigaisi is now third in the June FIDE rankings, in front of Gukesh, who is currently fifth. In the interim, Erigaisi has accumulated 2782 Elo rating points.
Erigaisi's live chess ranking fell to fourth place, though, following the conclusion of Norway Chess 2025. With 2776.6 Elo rating points, Gukesh, on the other hand, dropped to fifth place.
Magnus Carlsen won the championship at Norway Chess 2025, making it his seventh time in history, with 16 points. American GM Fabiano Caruana (15.5), followed by D Gukesh (14.5) in third place, came in second place in the meanwhile. With 14 points, American GM Hikaru Nakamura is currently fourth, while Erigaisi is fifth with 13 points. Wei Yi is at the bottom of the standings with 9.5 points.
In an interview with Chess24 during the competition, Carlsen issued a warning to Gukesh, saying, "I think that if Hikaru (Nakamura) or Fabi (Caruana), or probably Nepo (Ian Nepomniachtchi) for that matter, win the Candidates they would be, at the moment, they would be a favorite in a match against Gukesh. Hikaru has gotten close on two occasions. There's no reason why he couldn't because he's still very excellent.
"Gukesh has demonstrated in this competition that he is on track, doing great, but not ahead of track," he continued.
“Honestly, it could have meant a lot to me if I had finished off the game against Gukesh and then played a really good tournament,” Carlsen said of his loss to Gukesh in Round 6. Now, regardless of the outcome, it would be as if we had somewhat stumbled into a victory.
In their first round encounter, Carlsen prevailed over Gukesh; however, in round six, the Indian GM made the most of a massive time scramble mistake to secure his first classical victory against the World No. 1.
