Andre Russell to Play Farewell International Game in Australia T20I

On Wednesday, Andre Russell, an all-rounder for the West Indies, declared that he was quitting international cricket. The forthcoming T20I series against Australia at home will be his last time wearing the West Indies jersey.
Russell's selection to the five-match home white-ball series against the Aussies, which begins on Sunday, was shortly followed by the news. Prior to ending his international career, the 37-year-old will play the first two games of the series on July 20 and 22 at Sabina Park in Jamaica, his home stadium.
According to the West Indies, Russell's selection was entirely based on "performance merit, as he remains one of the most impactful T20 players in world cricket."
The versatile and energetic Jamaican said that it was an honor to represent the West Indies and wear the maroon for more than ten years. He expressed his appreciation and pride in doing so.

"It's impossible to express what it meant," he said. One of my proudest accomplishments has been speaking for the West Indies. I never anticipated reaching this level when I was a youngster, but as you begin to play and fall in love with the sport, you begin to see what you can accomplish. I was motivated by this to improve because I wanted to make a difference in the maroon colors and serve as an example for others.
Additionally, he shared his excitement at having been given the once-in-a-lifetime chance to play his last international match in front of his hometown fans.
"I enjoy playing for the West Indies, and I especially enjoy playing at home in front of my friends and family, where I can demonstrate my skills and deliver more high-caliber performances. Being an example for the next generation of Caribbean cricketers, I want to end my international career on a high note.
Following Nicholas Pooran, who announced his retirement two months prior, Russell is the second well-known West Indies player to give up playing international cricket. Consequently, with only seven months until the next T20 Word Cup, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026, this is yet another significant setback for the West Indies.
The 37-year-old has only played T20 since 2019, making a total of 84 appearances in the format, during which he won the T20 World Cup twice, once in 2012 and once in 2016. In addition to one Test match, he has also played 56 ODIs for the West Indies.
Matthew Forde will take Russell's place during the Warner Park leg of the series.
