Akash Deep, an Indian pacer, had a Test to remember when he led India to a resounding 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston, tying the five-match series at 1-1. The right-arm speedster helped Shubman Gill's India get back on level terms by taking 10 wickets overall, including a six-wicket haul in the second innings. In dedicating his performance to Akhand Jyoti Singh, Akash Deep disclosed that his older sister had been given a cancer diagnosis two months prior.

Akash Deep removed Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Ollie Pope, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, and Brydon Carse in the second innings. He made an effort to put his best foot forward, and India didn't feel the absence of Jasprit Bumrah since he was the finest pacer on display among both teams.

After leading India to victory, Akash Deep's sister told Aaj Tak that she did not anticipate her brother to bring up her cancer diagnosis. Prior to Akash Deep's major revelation, she also disclosed that her struggle with the illness was not widely known.

"I never imagined Akash would say such a thing. Perhaps we weren't prepared to discuss it in public, but the manner in which he became emotional and expressed it for me—dedicating it to me—is a major issue, she told Aaj Tak.

"It demonstrates how much he cares for our family and for me." It's a big deal, given the circumstances at home and the fact that you're still playing like that and picking up wickets there. She said that he is the person she is closest to.

She also said that she burst into tears after Akash Deep called her after the conclusion of the Edgbaston Test.

"We talked via video chat twice after the game and again at 5 a.m. the following morning." ‘Don’t worry, the entire nation is with us,’ Akash assured me. 'I couldn't contain it any longer,' he stated. "I had been attempting to, but yesterday I just couldn't help myself," she stated.

"A brother like that is hard to come by. He is really helpful and always consults with us before taking any action. He tells the family everything. He is currently in charge of the entire household because our father and oldest brother are no longer here,” she continued.

During IPL, Akash Deep's hospital visits

Earlier this year, during the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, when Akash Deep played for the Lucknow Super Giants, his sister was hospitalized. Despite his hectic schedule, Jyoti told us that Akash never missed the opportunity to see her at the hospital.

Akash Deep took three wickets in his six IPL games in the 2025 season.

"I was hospitalized for cancer therapy while he was playing for the Lucknow team during the IPL. “Even then, he would meet me either before or after the games,” Akash Deep’s sister said.

She also shared how Akash Deep has been a continuous source of strength for her and has always been there for her during her fight with cancer.

"He was the one who kept me going the most during my cancer therapy. I would tell him not to worry since I have my husband with me, but he would always respond, "Everything I have is for my sisters and my family." We are six siblings—three brothers and three sisters—one of whom has died. She stated, "Akash is the youngest."

"He always makes sure to video call home before and after each game. "I did all of this for you and for the nation," he informed me. "I took those wickets for you," she went on to say.

In the first innings of the Edgbaston Test, Akash Deep had also taken four wickets.
