Gautam Gambhir has apparently returned to England just days after hurrying back to New Delhi because of a family crisis. India will begin their World Test Championship campaign on June 20 with a five-Test series. After his mother, Seema, experienced a cardiac arrest on June 11, the 42-year-old was compelled to quit the squad camp in Beckenham.

Doctors have reportedly determined that she is no longer in danger as she continues to be monitored in the ICU in June 16. Gambhir chose to come back to England on Tuesday, June 17, to rejoin the Indian team, who are now getting ready for the first Test at Headingley, as her condition continued to improve. Gambhir departed for London on Tuesday, according to Cricbuzz.

With Shubman Gill at the helm of a squad lacking some of the most legendary figures in the history of Indian red-ball cricket, the series represents a new chapter in the game. A generational shift has been brought on by the retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, as well as the absence of pace spearhead Mohammed Shami due to injury. Gambhir's presence in the locker room is still priceless during such a transitional period.

Gambhir's presence in the dressing room before the series opener will be crucial, even if he missed India's lone tour match, a three-day intra-squad encounter in Beckenham that was supervised by assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, and bowling coach Morne Morkel. The former India opener has been in charge of the shift in the red-ball format.

India is attempting to win a series after 2007.

The inaugural Test of the recently established Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will take place at Headingley on June 20, with subsequent games at Edgbaston, Lord's, Old Trafford, and The Oval. India will strive to win a Test series in England after an 18-year hiatus; Rahul Dravid, who was the Indian head coach before Gambhir, captained the most recent squad to win a red-ball series on English ground. The previous time India toured England, a team captained by Virat Kohli took a 2-1 lead in the series after four games before the trip was interrupted by a Covid-19 outbreak.

The rescheduled game was finally played a year later, and the Ben Stokes-led English squad defeated Team India, which was then captained by Jasprit Bumrah, to tie the score.
