Agarkar, BCCI Advised to Give Shreyas Iyer Another Look for Captaincy After Unheard IPL Tale

With the team missing out on title glory by only six runs against eventual winners Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Shreyas Iyer may not have steered Punjab Kings to victory in IPL 2025, but the India celebrity certainly gained on a personal level. According to reports, Iyer is now in the running to succeed as the captain of India's white-ball team after guiding two separate franchises to the IPL final in back-to-back seasons, including Kolkata Knight Riders, who won in 2024.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is constantly reminded of the potential reasons why Iyer might be India's best option after Rohit Sharma, even if the BCCI has not yet formally addressed this change, and India is set to play its next white-ball match later this summer in the ODI tour of Bangladesh.

Iyer hasn't received any credit

Iyer's captaincy heroics have not been adequately recognized, according to Brad Haddin, the assistant coach for PBKS, who spoke on Tuesday on The Grade Cricketer podcast.

The match against the Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad during Qualifier 2 brought back memories for Haddin. Iyer walked in at the last minute and told the team management, which had ultimately decided to bat first due to the obvious indications from the venue's circumstances and prior records, that he would be choosing to bowl first and was certain that he could lead the team to a win. After that, the captain gave a fantastic performance at the plate, leading PBKS to their first IPL final since 2014.

"Everything at the stadium in Ahmedabad says bat first, and you do all of your game planning there." Everything from the match-ups to the analytics goes through your team's material, and everything points to bat first. Additionally, our captain has not received sufficient recognition in this area, and I am hoping that Iyer will be given serious consideration when it comes time to select an Indian captain. Throughout the tournament, he excelled. We tell him, "Yep, we are batting first." But he replies, "No, we're bowling." The punter replies, "okay, let the captain decide." 'No, I'll win the game and I'm going to bat second,' he stated. We bowl even if everything points to batting first. Then, in the second innings, the captain hit one of the finest IPL knocks I have ever seen, bringing us to the championship game," he said.

Mumbai had set a target of 204 while batting first. In response, PBKS completed the chase in the rain-hit match with an over to spare thanks to Iyer's undefeated 41-ball 87.
