After Australia Heroics, Shamar Joseph Sparks Indian Fan Craze: 'We Want Him in Blue!'

In the opening Test against Australia at Kensington Oval, Barbados, West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph ran wild with the new ball. At his own den, the tearaway pacer, who was instrumental in the West Indies' historic first-ever Test victory in Australia in 27 years in 2024, once again gave Pat Cummins and Co. problems. The right-arm pacer claimed two wickets of Sam Konstas and Cameron Green to put the Australians on the back foot, allowing only 13 runs in the first seven overs.
With a peach of a delivery, Joseph caught Konstas in front of the wicket in the game's fourth over. The Australian opener, who missed out on a spot in the WTC Final, was out for only 3 runs. Joseph produced another opportunity with the final ball of the over, but Brandon King was unable to secure Cameron Green's catch. But the young pacemen didn't stop there and later in the tenth over, they defeated Green for three runs. Additionally, he gave Usman Khawaja a hard time and nearly dismissed him in the eighth over, but one of his deliveries resulted in a dropped catch.
Joseph's passionate performance, which gave Australia a strong back foot early in the match, drew rave reviews from fans on social media. Some supporters even suggested that the BCCI trade him for players like Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna, who both had subpar performances against England in Leeds recently.
Australia win toss and opt to bat
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia, had previously won the toss and chosen to bat first on the first day of the first Test of a three-game series, but Joseph's deadly spell thwarted his strategy.
Having rung in significant changes since their drawn series in Pakistan in January, the West Indies are now aiming to end a 34-year drought without a home series win over Australia and a 22-year wait for a single Test victory against them in the Caribbean.
Roston Chase, a veteran off-spinning all-rounder who is making his 50th Test appearance, leads a team that includes just three members from the side that pulled off a series-levelling victory in Multan five months ago on a turning pitch: former captain Kraigg Brathwaite, all-rounder Justin Greaves, and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican. It has been three years since Chase last played.
