AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey Sets Deadline for Decision on Manolo Marquez’s Future
5 months ago | 5 Views
Kalyan Chaubey, the head of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), announced that the board will determine the fate of India head coach Manolo Marquez with the squad on June 29. Since taking over as coach last year after Igor Stimac left, Manolo Marquez has failed to make an impression, and the team's performance has continued to decline under his leadership.
By naming Marquez as a dual-role coach while remaining at FC Goa in the ISL, the AIFF took a risk. The Blue Tigers have not yet improved, and even their effort to bring Sunil Chhetri out of retirement in quest of a turnaround has not produced the desired results.
India's performance was criticized nationwide following the recent 0-1 loss to Hong Kong in the Asian Cup qualifiers, which has brought Marquez and the AIFF under scrutiny.
In a Friday press conference, AIFF president Chaubey discussed Marquez's future. The head coach will be chosen at an executive committee meeting on June 29, he announced.
"Manolo Marquez is a highly regarded coach with a solid grasp of Indian football and its players. Nonetheless, I've gotten a lot of questions in the last few days about whether the coach will stay. We will make a decision on that during our executive committee meeting on June 29. "However, it is unrealistic to expect wins without scoring first," Chaubey stated during the press conference.
With just one victory in their last eight matches under Marquez's direction, India's statistics show that he has been unable to stop the team's disturbing decline. There is increasing conjecture that the Spanish coach is unwilling to remain in his position, which is contributing to ambiguity about his future with the national team.
In preparation for Tuesday's important match, the squad had completed almost a three-week training camp in Kolkata. However, they fell short of expectations and suffered a discouraging defeat to a team that was significantly lower ranked. India, which is ranked 127th in FIFA's standings, was defeated by Hong Kong, which is ranked 153rd, which dealt a serious blow to their confidence. With forecasts indicating a decrease to 133 when the updated list is published, this latest reverse is anticipated to further weaken India's standing in the global rankings.
