AB de Villiers Raises Concerns Over Jasprit Bumrah’s Workload Management, Cites Dale Steyn’s Example

Jasprit Bumrah has been among India's key bowlers in all forms of the game. However, one of the team's biggest issues has been managing his workload, and during a vital five-test series against England, there have been questions about how India is using its most potent weapon.

As planned by the Indian management, Bumrah should have played in all five games of the series, not only three, according to former South African captain AB de Villiers.

"Right now, he's probably the best bowler in the world across all formats. As a result, it's quite challenging to figure out how to give him a break," De Villiers stated on his YouTube channel.

“However, in my view, Test cricket is the pinnacle of the sport. I believe that this Test series would have been the one to prepare him for all five Test games.

The 40-year-old, who played against Bumrah in the latter part of his career, drew a parallel between how South Africa used to treat Dale Steyn, a bowler with a similar background and history of injuries.

"We used to do that with Dale (Steyn). New Zealand, to some extent, depending on the rankings at the time, should rest him in less significant T20 and ODI series and prepare him for the major Test series away from home against Australia, England, and India.

Possible misconduct by AB de Villiers

Given the magnitude of the series and the circumstances that call for his accuracy and speed, there has been discussion regarding the possibility that Bumrah may not be available for India's second Test against England at Edgbaston. Although De Villiers was unsure of the call's origin, he did not discount the possibility that it was influenced by medical recommendations.

"Therefore, I'm not sure whether it was because of mismanagement or maybe because he had just recovered from an injury and saw the IPL as the warmup period," he stated.

“Perhaps, went to the surgeon, who told him, ‘You can’t play the five Test matches.’ Therefore, I mean, you must respect that, and ultimately, it's Team India's responsibility to handle him well.

With a sharp statement, De Villiers concluded, "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."
