Hulu just released the trailer for Washington Black, an upcoming adventure series based on Esi Edugyan’s bestselling novel. It's already creating a buzz as one of the most exciting period dramas of the year. The show is set to premiere on July 23, 2025. It follows the incredible story of George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy born into slavery on a Barbados sugar plantation. What starts as a fight for survival soon turns into an epic journey around the world filled with invention, loss, and finding himself.

Ernest Kingsley Jr. stars as Wash, bringing a mix of vulnerability and talent. His sharp scientific mind becomes his only way out when a violent incident sparks his escape. From there, Wash's journey takes him across different continents and shifts in identity. As he rides in balloons, faces icy cold, and explores freedom, he meets characters who help him—some guide him, others challenge him. The cast includes Sterling K. Brown, Tom Ellis, Iola Evans, Rupert Graves, and Sharon Duncan Brewster.

The series is created by Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, with a talented group of writers including Blaize Ali Watkins, Shernold Edwards, and Marco Ramirez. Washington Black mixes history with steampunk style, social themes, and emotional depth. Directors Maurice Marable, Wanuri Kahiu, and Rob Seidenglanz bring their vision to each episode. The show looks beautiful and makes you think about big questions about identity, belonging, and freedom.
