A Strong Start for War 2

The much-anticipated War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Yash Raj Films, has made a significant mark at the box office, crossing ₹200 crore worldwide by its third day ofリリース on August 16, 2025. Starring Hrithik Roshan as the rogue RAW agent Kabir and Jr NTR as the elite operative Vikram Chelapathi, the film has captivated audiences with its high-octane action and star-studded cast, including Kiara Advani, Ashutosh Rana, and Anil Kapoor. Despite a lukewarm opening, the film gained momentum, especially on Independence Day, with a reported ₹142.35 crore net in India across all languages by day three, as per Sacnilk.

Box Office Breakdown

War 2 opened with ₹52 crore net in India on August 14, followed by a robust ₹57.35 crore on day two, driven by the holiday buzz. However, day three saw a dip, collecting around ₹33 crore, bringing the domestic total to ₹142.35 crore. The Hindi version led the charge, contributing significantly, while Jr NTR’s star power boosted the Telugu version, which earned ₹35 crore in three days. Internationally, the film’s performance has been steady but not record-shattering, pushing it past the ₹200 crore global gross mark by Saturday. Despite this, trade analysts note that the film’s ₹300-400 crore budget demands a minimum of ₹650 crore to be deemed a hit.

Coolie’s Dominance at the Box Office

The film faces fierce competition from Rajinikanth’s Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which has stormed past ₹300 crore worldwide in just three days. Coolie’s opening day outpaced War 2 with ₹65 crore in India, and by day three, it amassed ₹158.25 crore domestically. The Tamil superstar’s mass appeal, coupled with strong performances in southern markets, has given Coolie an edge, particularly in Telugu-speaking regions, where it outperformed War 2 in advance bookings and premiere sales in markets like the USA.

Star Power and Audience Reception

Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR have expressed gratitude for the audience’s response, with Hrithik calling Kabir one of his most cherished roles and Jr NTR celebrating the “incredible” support for their passion project. Social media posts from both stars highlight the electric atmosphere in theaters. However, mixed reviews have tempered the film’s momentum, with critics pointing to a predictable storyline despite praising its action sequences and visuals. Kiara Advani’s fresh energy and the YRF Spy Universe’s legacy, including ties to Pathaan and Tiger, add to its appeal but haven’t fully countered Coolie’s dominance.

The Road Ahead

As War 2 heads into its first weekend, trade experts predict a potential boost on Sunday, given the lack of major competing releases. While it has surpassed Salman Khan’s Sikandar’s lifetime collection of ₹110 crore, War 2 must maintain its momentum to close the gap with Coolie. With its grand scale and Ayan Mukerji’s stylish direction, the film remains a strong contender, but the box office race is far from over.
