Veteran Actor Shivaji Hails 'Dhandoraa' as a Perfect Blend of Commercial Flair and Depth
1 day ago | 5 Views
Veteran actor Shivaji, celebrated for his penchant for taking on roles with complex emotional layers, has heaped praise on his upcoming film, Dhandoraa.
Ambiguous Role That Keeps the Audience Guessing
Shivaji revealed that the story of Dhandoraa had been offered to him much earlier, even before the release of his widely praised film Court. What immediately drew him in was the ambiguous nature of his character—a refreshing departure from his previous work.
"My role in Dhandoraa is deliberately ambiguous," Shivaji explained. "While watching the film, the audience won’t be able to clearly decide whether my character is good or bad. That judgement is left to them after the film ends." He revealed he plays a farmer, but stressed that the film is not a vehicle for a single hero; rather, it's an ensemble effort. However, the narrative frequently circles back to his character, lending it significant importance. He added that the film's writing ensures that "No character in this film exists merely to fill space. Everyone matters."
The Film’s Intent: Commercial Entertainment with Emotional Layers
When asked if Dhandoraa falls into the category of a 'message-oriented' film, Shivaji was quick to clarify its genre. He stated, “I wouldn’t call Dhandoraa a purely message-driven film. It’s a well-balanced commercial entertainer that blends emotion, drama, and realism.”
Shivaji emphasised that while the film contains strong emotional layers, it manages to avoid being preachy.
Confident of Impact: Layered Roles and Dignified Portrayal
Riding on the back of the immense appreciation he received for his role as Mangapathi in Court, Shivaji expressed confidence that his character in Dhandoraa would strike a similar chord with audiences. He acknowledged that receiving such layered roles, which allow him to explore a wide emotional range, often requires "a lot of luck."
Addressing the treatment of sensitive characters, Shivaji highlighted the dignified approach taken by the director. He specifically mentioned Bindu Madhavi’s role, stating, "In Dhandoraa, Bindu Madhavi’s character has been portrayed with a lot of dignity and class. The treatment is very respectful, and audiences will genuinely connect with both the character and the situation."
Reflecting on working mostly with new directors, Shivaji stated that he enjoys the fresh perspective they bring. He lamented that the industry often overlooks exceptional local talent like Navdeep, Nandu, and Ravi Krishna.
