Thug Life on Netflix: Viewers Divided as Some Call Kamal Haasan-Simbu Film ‘Not That Bad’ While Others Label It a ‘Dud’

OTT: Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, featuring Kamal Haasan, Simbu, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, and others in major roles, was released in cinemas on June 5 under the title Thug Life. The movie started airing on Netflix in less than a month. Some people thought the movie was "not as bad" as others portrayed it, while others thought it was just as "boring" as they remembered.

"Thug Life is not all that horrible"

Following its OTT launch, audiences debated Thug Life on Reddit and X (formerly Twitter). One person, however, "It's funny how 'Thug Life' movie reviewers can sometimes be on a totally different page," which the majority of the reviews got wrong. It's evident that they were mistaken after seeing it on Netflix. Mani's direction, along with Kamal Haasan and Simbhu's excellent performances, truly shines. It's a fascinating read that merits a watch.

"Watched Thug Life on Netflix," another idea that the movie was more cohesive than the majority of Mani Ratnam's works. It's not as horrible as they said it was. Simbu did a great job, and the plot was more coherent than in many of Mani Ratnam's other films.

After watching the movie again, one fan found it to be as excellent as they remembered it: "Re-watched #ThugLife on Netflix. With each subsequent viewing of a #ManiRatnam movie, you learn something new, which is its greatest asset. a subtle gesture, a layered emotion, a hidden meaning, etc. The story's use of dialogue alone to convey its message is something I find really interesting. "Just watched as I skipped it in the theatre," another stated. I really enjoyed it.

However, some people preferred particular sections of the movie, "I like certain parts in this movie. Yes, majority hate these scenes also, but I like two or three scenes." The remainder of the film is nothing but trauma for me. I especially enjoyed the jinguchaa song segment of April.

"Thug Life is a complete failure."

Following its over-the-top release, one X user made fun of those who enjoyed Thug Life by saying, "Thug Life is a misunderstood meta film." It sends a loud message to followers of KH/MR that you can only be betrayed by those you have the most faith in. Their career graphs are meta-referenced in the contrast between a respectable first half and an excruciatingly boring second half.

One Reddit user referred to it as a snoozefest, saying, "Just did a breezy rewatch yesterday in Netflix and boy after the flashback portions, it was straight dud." I mean, you can't even rewatch it at a trolling level. What a complete bust and bore for everyone's professional life.

Even "I watched this morning and man, instead of omaara they could have given the bgm they used for kamal intro in the flashback, that o maara song was such a misfit for simbu intro!" Some even had suggestions on how the film could have been improved. All I could bear was seeing kamal taken into custody. Oh my gosh."

Regarding Thug Life

Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ali Fazal, Sanjana Krishnamoorthy, and Tanikella Bharani are all in the cast of Thug Life. Because it reunited Kamal and Mani after their 1987 smash film Nayakan, the movie was much anticipated. Thug Life earned ₹97.25 crore throughout the course of its existence, according to Sacnilk. More than ₹200 crore was spent on its production.
