Thug Life Box Office Collection Day 9: Thug Life, which reunited Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan after the legendary Nayakan, had extremely high expectations. After its first weekend, the movie showed no indications of improvement and struggled against Housefull 3 in the Hindi market. Thug Life's first week earnings totaled ₹44 crore. Thug Life's total earnings now amount to ₹44.75 crore. On Friday, the movie had a total Tamil Occupancy of 15.89%.

Kamal's previous film, Indian 2, had earned over ₹80 crores in its first week, making Thug Life less successful.

The tale of a feared mafia kingpin seeking revenge after betrayal spans decades in Thug Life. Silambarasan TR, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Abhirami, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and Rohit Saraf also appear in the movie.

The movie hit theaters last week despite controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan's assertion that Kannada originated in Tamil. The movie was not shown in Karnataka because he declined to apologize. "My words were meant solely to express that we are all from the same family and one another, and not to disparage Kannada in any way. "There is no dispute or debate on the rich legacy of the Kannada language," he stated in an open letter a few days later.
