Malayalam cinema has found success in the thriller genre in recent years. Marco, an action thriller with graphic violence, concluded last year and enjoyed great success. Following the trend, the Mohanlal-led thrillers Empuraan and Thudarum were also among the major hits of 2025. Perhaps the only lighthearted movie that gained popularity this year was Alappuzha Gymkhana, which had no thrilling moments or violence. The finest Malayalam thrillers of 2025

Empuraan

The year started off with a highly anticipated release for Mohanlal, which went on to do well in theaters. After Chief Minister Jatin Ramdas establishes a new political party, the gripping political thriller follows Stephen Nedumpally, also known as Abraam Khureshi, as he makes his way back to Kerala. However, in addition to Kerala, the picture also incorporates stories from Gujarat and Khureshi's global connections as Interpol attempts to find him.

The movie, which was directed by the actor and filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran, also generated discussion. The sequel to the popular movie Lucifer, the thriller, was still a big hit at the box office, nevertheless.

Thudarum

Less than a month after the premiere of Empuraan, Mohanlal made his comeback to the silver screen with another captivating thriller, Thudarum. However, Thudarum centered on Benz Shanmugham, an average taxi driver, rather than the vast canvas of Empuraan. The movie quickly loses its family drama atmosphere, however, as the police confiscate Benz Shanmugham's car, which sets off a chain of events that are connected to his loved ones. After Benz's stepson Pavi is murdered in cold blood, the movie becomes a thrilling thriller as Benz seeks retribution. The movie also includes George Sir's despicable adversary, so be on the lookout for Mohanlal killing it in the action scenes once more.

Rekhachithram

After a skeleton is discovered buried in the woods, Rekhachithram follows police Vivek as he attempts to determine who the victim and murderer are. His investigation brings him to a Malayalam movie filmed in 1985, starring Mammootty. Despite adding crime and mystery aspects, Rekhachithram still tells a compelling story that will excite and move you. This movie, starring Malayalam stars Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan, became the first Malayalam blockbuster of 2025.

The Officer on Duty

In this other police thriller, actor Kunchacko Boban plays the passionate Harishankar, who investigates a phony jewelry scam only to discover its connection to a far more heinous crime. As Harishankar investigates the case, he uncovers nefarious schemes and heinous offenses. The movie was written and directed by Shahi Kabir, with Jithu Ashraf as the director. The movie, which is full of surprises and a few instances of unvarnished violence, maintains a sense of suspense throughout. Priyamani and Jagadish are joined by Vishak Nair, who plays the film's villain. On Netflix, you may watch Officer on Duty.

Narivetta

This thrilling drama, which centers on a tribal revolt, is led by Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas. The state has not yet given the promised land to the tribals, who have been protesting. However, the police intervention causes a tense confrontation between the protesting tribals and the officers. This movie raises some disturbing questions and is filled with a threatening vibe. Narivetta was able to win over crowds, even considering the seriousness of the topic and its political ramifications.
