The Sandman Season 2 Faces Backlash Amid Neil Gaiman Controversy

On July 3, Netflix released the first six episodes of The Sandman season 2's first half without fanfare. After the controversy in which Neil Gaiman was accused of sexual assault by several women—claims he refuted—comes the screenplay version of The Sandman. The last season has so far gotten mostly negative reviews from critics, which has come under the cloud of this dispute.
What do the reviewers think of the second season of The Sandman?
Jack Seale slammed the series in his piece for The Guardian. The review included the sentence, "The Sandman is not short on ideas, but it smothers them all in a fog of pretense, missing every opportunity it creates for itself." The ability of Morpheus to enter people's dreams, shape them, and make them real is hardly mentioned.
“The problem with The Sandman, in particular, is that it is not very gripping and not very funny," said Nick Hilton of The Independent, who also gave it a bad review. There aren't enough humorous features, such as Steve Coogan playing a chatty dog, Barnabas, or Mark Hamill resuming his character as Mervyn Pumpkinhead, the foul-mouthed scarecrow janitor. Additionally, it features 10 seconds of Lenny Henry using one of the worst American accents ever seen on television.
"Dream and his (very odd) sister Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles) set out on what amounts to a bizarre road trip in search of their estranged brother Destruction (Barry Sloane). The comic's depiction of the two engaging in a commercial airline battle is hilarious. However, these scenarios are devoid of any hint of sarcasm or humor in the Netflix series. The AV Club's review of Stephen Robinson's show put it this way: "The show is simply serious at a time when fantasy works are confident enough to not take themselves so seriously."
This season, Allan Heinberg serves as the showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Among others, the show features Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, and Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess. Volume 2 (Episodes 7–11) will bring the season to a close on July 24. On July 31, a unique bonus episode will be available.
