Since its release on Sony LIV, The Hunt – The Rajiv Gandhi Assassination case, a 7-part web series by Nagesh Kukunoor, has earned accolades from all quarters. Ever since it debuted on July 4, 205, the show has received rave reviews from viewers overall, praising its factual accuracy and excellent casting. The program centers on the 90 days following the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at an election rally in Sriperumbudur, which ended with the murder of the masterminds of the plot at a home in Bengaluru.

The sixth and seventh episodes of the series center on the events that occurred in Bengaluru, such as the fruitless raids in Indiranagar and other locations, as well as the conflict between the various organizations over operational authority and the chain of command. Given that the majority of the conversations in the show are in Hindi and Tamil—since the main conspirators were LTTE operatives or sympathizers—what audiences in Karnataka have noticed is the absence of Kannada dialogues in the Bengaluru scenes. Additionally, the stray line that is said aloud is horribly mispronounced. This is a significant oversight for a program that seems to have paid close attention to every detail, they say.

Why is there no Kannada in Bangalore?

The portrayal of Konankunte as this dry and barren region has also been criticized by viewers. In the midst of all of this, there have been hints that the 2006 Kannada-Tamil bilingual film Cyanide/Kuppi, directed by AMR Ramesh, does a better job of portraying the Bengaluru operation to catch Sivarasan and his gang. Cyanide was solely about the 20 days of the Bengaluru operation to hunt and capture Sivarasan.

The film won a Karnataka state film award, while Tara, who played Mridula, the wife of Ranganath, who sheltered the LTTE operatives in Bengaluru. “Binge watchd #TheHunt, grt research, on dot casting, gripping, all ok,bt #bengaluru chapter of #sivarasan hidin, #kannada &the treatment overall, disappointd. #Cyanide holds upperhand in this, cult classic, @AMRRamesh &team, kickass #film,” wrote one, while another added, “i would confidently say that a #Kannada movie named #Cyanide was made on the same subject and brilliantly made. It kept the audience at the age of the seat.”
