Thalapathy Vijay's Ghilli is enjoying unprecedented success with its historic re-release worldwide. While dominating the majority of screens in Tamil Nadu, the reception for the 20-year-old film is equally remarkable in foreign countries. Recently, fan celebrations during a screening of Ghilli in London spiralled out of control, forcing the theatre to halt the screening halfway.

The video showing a team of cops escorting fans out of the theatre has surfaced online, adding momentum to the worldwide frenzy surrounding Ghilli.

Released in cinemas last week to coincide with its 20th anniversary, Ghilli was expected to garner a moderate response from Vijay's hardcore fans. Considering the film's two-decade-old status and its availability on multiple streaming platforms like SunNXT, Aha Tamil, and OTTplay Premium, the trade didn't anticipate much from the re-release.

Ghilli box office record

However, Ghilli surpassed expectations, receiving an overwhelming response from fans. Initially opening on just a handful of screens, it now plays on over 220 screens in Tamil Nadu alone, with demand prompting an increase in shows and theatres. Even weekday shows are witnessing full houses.

Reports indicate that "Ghilli" has earned over Rs 20 crore from worldwide ticket sales so far, with Tamil Nadu contributing the majority. It is setting new box office records and appears poised to surpass the collection that Titanic 3D made in India after its re-release.

Sakthivelan B, the film's distributor from Sakthi Film Factory, stated that if tickets for Ghilli had been sold at normal rates, it would have earned around Rs 30 crore in its first week alone.
