In the series finale of Ironheart on Marvel Television, a long-rumored villain was introduced to the MCU, laying the groundwork for a magical-mechanical fight, leaving both viewers and the show's main character speechless.
A larger unveiling as well as a fight between The Hood and Riri Williams.
In the series conclusion, Anthony Ramos' Parker Robbins, also known as The Hood, confronts Dominique Thorne's Riri Williams. Robbins possesses skills related to black magic. But it is only after the conflict ends that the actual truth becomes apparent. Riri walks into an empty pizza restaurant in Chicago and comes across a mysterious being that many people initially believed to be the demon Dormammu from Doctor Strange (2016). But the veiled character reveals something quite different: Mephisto, not Dormammu, is played by Sacha Baron Cohen.
Thorne told Variety that he learned during the middle of our production, adding, "So, by the time they gave me the correct name in the script, it was like, 'Whoa, the Reddit guy! The guy from all the rumors. He’s in this show? OK, you all are serious!’"
Dominique Thorne's reaction to the Mephisto revelation
Thorne thinks that the unveiling demonstrates Marvel's commitment to carrying on Riri's tale. She adds, "The true Marvel fans know that Marvel always has a plan." The fact that they've chosen to bring him here with Parker Robbins and Riri Williams is deliberate, and it aligns with the larger scheme of the narrative and the surprises that this stage is still bringing out.
According to Ryan Coogler, who directed Black Panther and served as the executive producer of Ironheart, this series of events was planned. "I love the compression that we have in this show," Coogler says of Riri's metamorphosis from an MIT student into a demon from another world. The filmmaker said that the series has always centered on these two children's quest for freedom and on seeing Riri face several obstacles, both on the streets and in the Armour War.
Mephisto's look
Coogler also praised the introduction of Mephisto. "I just really love that we're not encountering him in WandaVision or Agatha All Along," he said. "You're meeting him through this stressed-out, young Black genius. He'll be there: in a pizza business in Chicago, for example, where you'd least expect to see him.
The addition of Mephisto was a "collaborative" choice, said head writer Chinaka Hodge. They all agreed as a group about Mephisto, but the person who led the group will always be grateful to him.
The Creative Pivot Explained
Parker's abilities were initially connected to Dormammu by Marvel Comics. Zoie Nagelhout, who oversees Marvel, summarizes the shift in approach. "We realized that Mephisto was a better thematic match for the show's subject matter as we created it. In particular, she adds, he provided a kind of fascinating and elevated approach to connect the characters' journeys, notably Riri's.
Baron Cohen's part was recommended by Angela Barnes, the show's director, who was also in charge of the conclusion. They couldn't ignore it because Nagelhout reminded them that it was her idea. They are extremely lucky that he accepted.
A high level of secrecy surrounds Sacha Baron Cohen's cameo appearance.
The measures taken by Marvel on the set to hide Baron Cohen's identity were extraordinary. They would wrap him in tarps, Nagelhout recalled, and "The poor guy had to walk like two steps at a time."
Baron Cohen is rumored to have played the role of Mephisto two or three times. As Hodge pointed out, this flexibility is essential since Mephisto has the potential to alter his look. She discusses how the introduction of Mephisto to the MCU may be a potent weapon, perhaps paving the way for a future iteration starring Meryl Streep.
