Paradise, which is written and directed by Sri Lankan filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage, has Darshana Rajendran and Roshan Mathew playing the main characters. Paradise held the title of multilingual movie since it depicted a Malayali couple in Sri Lanka and had dialogue in Malayalam, English, Tamil, and Sinhala throughout the film. Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran discussed the politics of language and the appeal of producing multilingual movies like Paradise in an exclusive interview with an online media.

In the 2022 movie Paradise, Malayalam actors Roshan Mathew and Darshana Rajendran played the married couple, Keshav and Amritha, who are also shaken by Sri Lanka's economic problems during a vacation. Since the majority of the cast and crew for Paradise were from Sri Lanka, the main performers had to invent their own Malayalam lines.

"This was a new sensation for me language-wise," Darshana explains of her experience. The manner we approached language study seemed quite thrilling to me. We are all multilingual. We speak in a specific language to some individuals, and we also move between languages within our group. In front of someone who doesn't understand Malayalam, why is Keshav addressing me in that language? We had a great time with the politics of language.

"We had the liberty to go to all languages we had - like how we would speak, if we went to Sri Lanka," Darshana said, even though she maintained that it was a wonderful trip. These are the languages we are familiar with and able to communicate in. In movies, there's not much opportunity for that.

With Anupama Parameswaran, Darshana has a forthcoming Telugu movie named Paradha and has also appeared in Malayalam and Tamil movies.

Given that none of us are limiting ourselves to just one language, Roshan Mathew also discusses the significance of multilingual movies like Paradise.

"I'm really thrilled about movies like Paradise that also look at many languages. As he put it, "Particularly in a nation like India, and in today's environment, where the majority of us are either a member of or surrounded by multilingual communities."

"There is far more opportunity and potential for films like Paradise, which are multilingual by nature." The actor, who recently appeared in the Malayalam movie Ronth, said that this kind of thing allows you to tell a more truthful and realistic story, rather than everyone speaking the same language. Before then, he was the star of the Hindi online series Kankhajura, which is currently available on  SonyLiv.
