Revising Committee Recommends Removal of ‘Janaki’ from Malayalam Film JSK; Awaiting Suresh Gopi’s Response

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is keeping an eye on the Malayalam film Janaki v/s State of Kerala (JSK) for using the term Janaki in the picture. The film, which starred Suresh Gopi in a courtroom drama, was seen by the revising committee on Thursday, and they have also requested that Janaki's name be changed. Because the film uses the name Janaki in over ninety scenes, this is a significant setback for the creators of JSK. Despite the controversy surrounding the choice, Suresh Gopi, a BJP MP and the head of JSK, has not yet addressed the matter.
JSK row: The revising committee wants to alter the name 'Janaki'
The revising committee has also sought to rename Janaki, one of the characters in the Malayalam film JSK, as part of the continuing controversy surrounding the film. The same recommendation had been made by the previous censor board, which had then sent JSK to the review committee.
The movie's title character is Janaki (played by Anupama Parameswaran), whose name appears around 92 times throughout. According to Malayalam news channels, the revising committee met in Mumbai on Thursday morning and notified the producers and director Pravin Narayanan of the modifications to be made.
According to the Malayalam news reports, the full film will need to be redubbed if the name is to be deleted from JSK.

The movie Janaki v/s State of Kerala was scheduled for theatrical release on June 27, 2025, but with the revising committee also rejecting it, the release date of JSK remains uncertain.
It's interesting to note that the film's main character is played by Suresh Gopi, the BJP lawmaker from Kerala. So far, the actor-politician has not made a public statement on the subject.
An explanation of the JSK row
The usage of the name Janaki in the movie caused issues for JSK when the CBFC objected to it. The filmmakers at Cosmos Entertainments had gone to the Kerala High Court after experiencing a delay in getting the CBFC certificate. The court was told by the CBFC that the revising committee will meet to make a decision. In the midst of all of this, the film's director, Pravin, had criticized the action in a Facebook post, questioning how names associated to deity may be forbidden from being used in films. The matter will be brought up again before the Kerala High Court on Friday.
