Rajinikanth’s much-anticipated action thriller Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, continues to dominate the Tamil box office even two weeks after its release. On the auspicious occasion of Vinayakar Chaturthi, the film recorded a noticeable uplift in collections, adding Rs 4.50 crore on Day 14 alone amid a lack of major Tamil releases. This helped Coolie consolidate its position as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025, with a domestic total of Rs 268.75 crore and a whopping Rs 500 crore worldwide gross.

Coolie’s Journey at the Box Office

Released on August 14, Coolie had a spectacular start, breaking multiple records. The ensemble cast, featuring stars like Nagarjuna, Upendra, Aamir Khan, Sathyaraj, Shruti Haasan, and others alongside Rajinikanth, helped generate enormous buzz. According to trade reports, Coolie grossed approximately Rs 150 crore on its opening day, the highest-ever for a Tamil film.

Despite a strong opening, the film experienced fluctuations in daily collections, with some dips reported in the days that followed. However, Coolie managed to sustain a significant audience base, especially thanks to Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction and Anirudh Ravichander’s music, which received widespread appreciation.

With Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations on August 27 and no major Tamil releases around, Coolie capitalized on the holiday crowd. The Rs 4.50 crore collection on this day marked a slight growth compared to the previous days, indicating sustained interest among fans.

These festive boosts are crucial in extending a film’s theatrical run and maintaining momentum as newer films prepare to enter the market. Coolie is expected to continue its theatrical presence until the release of the next big Tamil film, Madharaasi.

Coolie has also performed exceptionally well in overseas markets, particularly in North America and Australia. The U.S. distributors have reported collections over $6.8 million (around Rs 59 crore), making it the highest-grossing Tamil film in that region. Overall, Coolie has crossed the Rs 500 crore mark globally, marking it as Rajinikanth’s second post-pandemic major blockbuster after Jailer.

This feat places Coolie among the elite highest-grossing Tamil films of all time and showcases Rajinikanth’s continuing box office draw.
