The beloved 2005 romantic drama Parineeta is set to grace Indian cinemas once again on August 29, 2025, marking its 20th anniversary. Directed by the late Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, this adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 Bengali novel will be re-released in a breathtaking 8K restored version with remastered 5.1 surround sound. PVR INOX, in collaboration with Vinod Chopra Films, is bringing this cinematic gem back for a special one-week run, celebrating not only the film’s legacy but also 20 years of Vidya Balan’s remarkable journey in Indian cinema and 50 years of Vinod Chopra Films. The restoration, partly done at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy, promises richer visuals and an immersive experience, making it India’s first 8K restored classic.

Vidya Balan’s Emotional Bond with Parineeta

For Vidya Balan, Parineeta is more than just her Bollywood debut—it’s a deeply personal milestone. Playing Lalita, a character caught in a poignant love story set in 1960s Kolkata, Balan poured her heart into every frame. Reflecting on the re-release, she shared, “This is where it all began for me. Each scene holds a piece of my soul, and I’m forever thankful to Pradeep da and Mr. Vinod Chopra for their faith in me.” She credits the film for shaping her as an actor and hopes new audiences will discover its old-world charm. Fans still cherish the film’s soulful music and painterly visuals, a testament to Sarkar’s visionary direction.

Parineeta boasts an ensemble cast, with Saif Ali Khan as Shekhar, the intense yet restrained romantic lead, and Sanjay Dutt as Girish, a supportive friend. Saif described the film as a career-defining moment, allowing him to explore a nuanced side of his craft. “Its elegance and depth are rare,” he said, reminiscing about the joy of working with the team. Sanjay Dutt, whose role followed his collaboration with Chopra on Munnabhai MBBS, called it a project filled with honesty and warmth. The film’s soundtrack, composed by Shantanu Moitra with lyrics by Swanand Kirkire and Gulzar, remains iconic, with songs like Piyu Bole and Kasto Mazza still resonating with audiences.

The re-release is a milestone for Vinod Chopra Films, the first Indian production house to restore its entire library in 8K, a four-year labor of love. Niharika Bijli of PVR INOX highlighted the growing demand for classic films, noting that Parineeta offers a perfect blend of nostalgia and cultural richness. This re-release invites both longtime fans and new viewers to experience a story of love, class, and resilience in early 20th-century India, brought to life with unparalleled visual splendor.
