The release of Oho Enthan Baby was a welcome change at a time when Tamil film was becoming less and less of a rom-com. Oho Enthan Baby, starring Mithila Palkar in her Tamil debut and introducing actor Vishnu Vishal's younger brother Rudra, will be released in cinemas on July 11. Oho Enthan Baby, which is expected to fill the void in rom-coms and targets a young audience, is financed by Vishnu Vishal himself.

In conversation with OTTplay, Rudra talks about he came into the film industry and Oho Enthan Baby happened. “Not many know but Vishnu’s parents and my parents are siblings, as in our fathers are brothers and mothers are sisters. My father was a junior artiste who wanted Vishnu to be an actor. I have seen my dad wanting to be an actor and had to quit because it was getting tough. To get even one line of a dialogue was hard. But I have always wanted to be actor, even as Vishnu had wanted to be a cricketer,” Rudra says.

So, when Vishnu Vishal entered cinema with Vennila Kabaddi Kuzhu happened (Vishnu Vishal’s debut), and saw the reception the film got, that was when Rudra cemented his wish to become an actor. “I was studying class eight, and I was sure I will get into the field. I finished college, and became assistant director to AR Murugadoss sir for Darbar,” he added. It was at this time when he learned the creative aspects of filmmaking but also how it is also called an ‘industry’ where the financial aspects and business also come into play. “Now when I hear a script, I can look into both ways. I understand what budgets suit for what kind of films. Before Vishnu came into films, it was just art for me. But now, I understand the number game, market. Things are beyond whistles, and FDFS,” Rudra says.

When Vishnu Vishal received the script of Oho Enthan Baby, he had decided to launch Rudra with it, and fixed on director Krishnakumar Ramakumar after watching his segment from Modern Love Chennai- Kaadhal Enbadhu Kannula Heart Irukkara Emoji. “Krishna sir is very good with his quirks. When he heard the script, he was not hesitant that it was someone else’s script but was very open to doing it. I was doubtful if he will be willing to work with a new actor like me, but he found it positive that someone with no baggage will be starring in the story. It was his positivity which led the whole vibe on the sets of Oho Enthan Baby.”

‘I was confident I will get one chance’

Rudra says that he was confident he will get one chance, and wanted to work towards it instead of taking it lightly. The young actor says that given his first film is backed by his brother, he found it very helpful to be comfortable on sets. “Whatever said and done, this film has so many artistes who come with big experience. I was scared to work with Mysskin sir. I have known Karunakaran anna for many years, but I was still scared to work alongside him. But somewhere since I had personal relationship, helped me. People knew it was backed by my brother, and since I have been on sets, I knew how hard it could get. Thankfully that did not happen to me. All of them were warm with me, and they could see that I am trying to achieve something here. They understood me and made me comfortable.”

The actor also credits his co-star Mithila, who had been kind and understanding, given she comes with experience. “She knew the craft much better than me. And I knew the language. So, it was sharing and helping out each other.”

Concluding the conversation, Rudra says that his biggest takeaway is to be patient and let each moment teach him. “I never have the feeling that I know what I am doing. Keep your eyes and ears open and be receptive. You might not understand what the other person is saying but will know from where the person is coming from. It will help you somewhere, someday,” he signs off.
