Netflix has dropped the first trailer for its upcoming Brazilian mini-series, Rivers of Fate. The show is a dark, atmospheric thriller inspired by Edyr Augusto’s well-known novel with the same name. Directed by Quico Meirelles and Fernando Meirelles, the series looks at survival, trauma, and strength, set against the mysterious Amazon River. In Brazil, the series was called Pssica, and it’s coming out on August 20, 2025.
The story centers on Janalice, played by Domithila Cattete. She’s a teenager who gets kidnapped by a brutal river gang in Pará. Her kidnapping pulls her into a dangerous international sex trafficking ring. Along her journey, she crosses paths with others battling their own inner demons. The show weaves several stories together, showing how fate and fear shape lives along the Amazon’s edges. The trailer hints at the region’s beauty, but also its lawlessness and hidden violence.
The cast features Marleyda Soto, Lucas Galvino, Ademara, Bruno Goya, Claudio Jaborandy, Luca Dan, Ricardo Teodoro, Sandro Guerra, Welket Bungué, and Wesley Guimarães. Their performances add power to the story. Created by Stephanie Degreas, Fernando Garrido, and Bráulio Mantovani, Rivers of Fate mixes social realism with intense drama. It draws from the region's tough realities and local folklore, including the curse called pssica that seems to follow Janalice.
With strong themes and intense storytelling, plus the visual style of the Meirelles brothers—known for City of God and The Two Popes—Rivers of Fate is set to be one of Netflix’s most gripping dramas this year. The show explores exploitation and crime but also highlights the courage of those fighting back.
