Neil Druckmann, the co-creator of the highly praised HBO version of The Last of Us, has stated that he is leaving the show in order to devote his full attention to his job at Naughty Dog, the PlayStation-owned business that developed the original games.
Neil Druckmann made his departure known
In an Instagram message on Naughty Dog's official profile, Druckmann made the announcement. I've made the tough choice to withdraw from my creative engagement with The Last of Us on HBO, Druckmann said. Now is the moment for me to devote myself fully to Naughty Dog and its upcoming ventures, such as writing and directing our next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, as well as my duties as Studio Head and Head of Creative, now that Season 2 is finished and development on Season 3 is beginning to ramp up.
In addition, he said, "Co-creating the show has been a career highlight." It's been a privilege to collaborate with Craig Mazin to executive produce, direct, and write the previous two seasons. I am really grateful for the intelligent strategy and hard work that the talented cast and crew put into adapting The Last of Us Part I and continuing to adapt The Last of Us Part II.
Writer Hally Gross also announces departure
In addition to being an executive producer and writer for the series, Halley Gross, who co-wrote The Last of Us Part II, has also revealed that she is leaving the program.
Gross also posted on her Instagram account, saying, "With great care and consideration, I've decided to take a step back from my day-to-day work on HBO's The Last of Us to make space for what comes next." I'm really grateful for how unique this has been. It has been life-altering to collaborate with Neil, Craig, HBO, and this amazing ensemble and crew.
The reason I adore this franchise is because of the tales we told about love, loss, and what it means to be a human in a frightening environment, she continued. I'm really excited to share some genuinely awesome projects that I have planned, but for the time being, I want to thank everyone who put so much effort into bringing Ellie and Joel's world to reality.
About The Last of Us
HBO's The Last of Us is a highly praised post-apocalyptic drama. Season 1 was one of the most highly rated shows in HBO history. The narrative follows Joel, a tough survivor, and Ellie, a teenage girl who might hold the secret to saving humanity, in a world devastated by a fungal epidemic. It received extensive acclaim and 24 Primetime Emmy nominations during its debut season.

Viewer response has been more polarized, despite critics' ongoing acclaim for the show's performances. Audience scores on sites like Rotten Tomatoes have significantly declined, falling below 50%, and user ratings on Metacritic have trended downward in a similar way. Some of the main plot points, notably Joel's death, drew criticism during the season.
Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, Anna Torv, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Storm Reid, Lamar Johnson, Keivonn Woodard, Melanie Lynskey, Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson are all members of The Last of Us.
New cast members like Tati Gabrielle, Danny Ramirez, Kaitlyn Dever, Young Mazino, and Isabela Merced were added to the cast in season two.
