Nagesh Kukunoor reveals his ‘keeda’ for innovation while discussing The Hunt
5 months ago | 5 Views
Nagesh Kukunoor is a filmmaker-actor who constantly breaks the rules. His first independent film, Hyderabad Blues, and his political thriller series, City of Dreams, both feature subtle acts of rebellion. But when you ask the director if he sees himself as a rebel, he answers with a smile and an explanation.
Nagesh Kukunoor's reaction to being labeled a rebel
Ahead of the debut of The Hunt, a Sony LIV (OTTplay Premium) original series on July 4, 2025, "I don't know if I've ever been accused of being a rebel. I'm going to smile at that and take it as a compliment."
"Much of what I do is not done with the intention of defying the system," he says. "It's more about attempting to tell stories that I haven't told before."
With The Hunt, one may explore true crime.
The Hunt, which is Kukunoor's first attempt into the true crime genre, is a novel that he adapted into a long web series. For someone who is known for creating believable and realistic characters, this was a fascinating and unique undertaking.
I was really interested in how you would turn a book into a true crime story because I had never done so before. And is it possible to make it interesting as a web series? "Where can I have a larger format to explore people's personalities a bit, extend things out, and yet maintain interest?" he asks.
Not remaining in the comfort zone
Kukunoor's pieces have rarely followed popular trends, and in his opinion, this aversion to repetition is more of an impulse than a strategy.

"When you're informed that you have a couple of hits in a certain genre, this sort of thing enters into filmmakers, and you latch onto it, and then you do that for the rest of your life," he says. "If you look at my filmography, I never have followed that format. I'm always seeking out new experiences.
City of Dreams comes along because I haven't performed a political show, Kukunoor said. Since I haven't completed several seasons, I continued with two more of them. I completed Modern Love: Hyderabad since I had never produced an anthology before. I'm simply explaining the origins of the decision, as you can see. It doesn't fantasize about demography.
Restlessness in mind
That restlessness and wish to explore the unknown are what motivate him. "It's constant to do something that I have not done before," the director stated at the end, adding that "that's my only keeda' in life."
Kukunoor's story continues to take unexpected twists and turns in The Hunt, as he keeps breaking new ground in creative and unexplored areas of narrative sincerity.
