The third week of June was a major week for movies all around the world. Aamir Khan in Sitaare Zameen Par and Dhanush in Kuberaa were two notable examples of Indian celebrities making a comeback on the big screen. And in the West, Pixar's Elio was making its debut on film. Materialists and Mission: Impossible 8 were already performing well in theaters. Despite all of this, a niche horror picture starring a 14-year-old managed to steal the show. In addition to this, it made up for its expenditures during the first weekend.

The 14-year-old who defeated heavyweights

This weekend saw the theatrical release of Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later. Though the cast of the horror survival thriller includes well-known actors such Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes, the lead role is played by Alfie Williams, a 14-year-old rookie who portrays a pre-teen youngster. With $30 million in revenue from its debut weekend in the US and $60 million overall, the movie was a box office hit. Only How to Train Your Dragon had a better box office performance for any movie in the world this weekend. 28 Years Later even surpassed the highly anticipated Pixar animated film Elio, which only made $36 million worldwide.

However, the fact that a movie led by a 14-year-old outperformed not only these releases but also Materialists, which featured Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, and Dakota Johnson and made only $9 million during the weekend, was far more noteworthy. Over the course of this weekend, even Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning made only $12 million. But both movies are older releases. Prior to this weekend, Mission: Impossible 8 had already made over $500 million. However, in a straight conflict, Alfie Williams was able to outshine one major celebrity. Sitaare Zameen Par, which was released this week and starred Bollywood legend Aamir Khan, made about $12 million over the weekend.

The remarkable accomplishment at the box office 28 years later

With a small budget of $50 million, 28 Years Later is the third installment of Danny Boyle's tale of the undead. The movie has already made more than $60 million worldwide, recouping its budget in only three days. 28 Years Later is the first installment of a trilogy that is planned, as well as the sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. The next installment, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, reunites Alfie Williams and Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later. It will be available in 2026.
