Malayalam Filmmakers Criticize CBFC’s ‘Unfounded’ Suggestions in Janaki v/s State of Kerala Controversy

The Malayalam film Janaki v/s State of Kerala has been the subject of a legal dispute for the last several weeks. The conflict came to a head today (July 9) when the film's producers agreed to two changes in the Kerala High Court that were recently proposed by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The producers of JSK are backed by film organizations

FEFKA general secretary B Unnikrishnan praised the director and producers of Janaki v/s State of Kerala for their steadfastness in rejecting the CBFC's recommendations for the film's 96 alterations. "The film community backed the movie's producers. These issues will occasionally occur. We will examine the 10-page document that the board submitted to the court and make recommendations to help avoid similar problems in the future, he said.

The CBFC exploited the vulnerability of producers, according to B Rakesh, secretary of the Producers' Association. Additionally, he said that their group does not back the proposal to alter the character's name or the movie's title. The producers and director of the courtroom drama were also supported by Rakesh. The movie's director, Pravin Narayanan, meanwhile, claimed that the updated version will be released by Friday.

The advice given by the CBFC is criticized by directors

Sanal V Devan, the director of Varaham, another much anticipated film from Suresh Gopi for 2025, expressed his displeasure at such ideas that limit an artist's creative license in a chat with OTTplay. "We must bear in mind that these sorts of issues might occur at any moment. Talking about muting certain portions of a movie ruins the cinematic experience," he stated. The title of his upcoming movie, Varaham, which also has a connection to a Hindu deity, is now giving him cause for concern, according to Sanal.

Sethunath Padmakumar, the head of Abhyanthara Kuttavaali, pointed out that because most of our population is named after different deities, a name cannot ever insult someone's beliefs. "Every one of these ideas is based on names that we've heard and seen numerous times in movies of various genres. The Kazhcha even has a song called "Dup Dup Janaki." As this song implies, may we now declare that Janaki shouldn't go fetch water? he told OTTplay.
