Kuberaa: Why Nagarjuna's Journey Leaves a Bigger Impact Than Dhanush's

In Sekhar Kammula's Kuberaa, Telugu actor Nagarjuna angered Dhanush admirers when he declared that Deepak, his character, is the film's protagonist. Naturally, the army of Dhanush admirers didn't respond well to this, and they voiced their displeasure in no uncertain terms. In the Telugu movie, which has become a big hit, Nagarjuna does have a point regarding Deepak's character arc, which is superior to that of Deva (played by Dhanush), even though we are not going into the discussion of who the main character is. Let's examine the reasons behind this, and of course, beware of spoilers!
Dhanush's persona in Kuberaa is Nagarjuna.
Sekhar Kammula, who also co-wrote Kuberaa with Chaithanya Pingali, directed the film, which stars Dhanush, Nagarjuna, Jim Sarbh, and Rashmika Mandanna.
Neeraj Mitra's discovery of an oil deposit in the Bay of Bengal sets off the events of the 2025 Telugu movie. Neeraj employs Deepak, a former CBI official currently languishing in prison, to help with the financial transactions required to keep the politicians and media in line. Even after former President APJ Abdul Kalam presented him with an award, Deepak initially declines but is ultimately compelled to agree to reconcile with his family. However, Deepak treats the beggars with respect even as he devises the dubious plot to employ them as benami, which wins him the favor of Deva (played by Dhanush).
Despite having changed his allegiance to the dark side, we still regard Deepak as the messiah of the oppressed. However, we continue to observe him compromising his ethics as he turns a blind eye when two of the beggars are taken away to be executed.
However, when Deva escapes and his family's destiny is uncertain, Deepak resorts to the unthinkable as well, putting a gun to Sameera's (Rashmika Mandanna) head and shooting a police officer point-blank when he realizes he has been trapped. Even though Deva also loses faith in Deepak, the former policeman ultimately realizes the horrors he has committed and, in the film's finale, fights and dies to defend the expectant Khusboo, whom he had been protecting.
Deepak's journey in Sekhar Kammula's film spans from being a morally upright officer to a co-conspirator, then to genuinely getting blood on his hands, and ultimately rectifying his errors.

Dhanush, who portrays the beggar named Deva, on the other hand, progresses from being the innocent person who ultimately stands up for himself and the oppressed like him. The movie is centered around the main character's straightforward and predictable character arc. Neeraj Mitra, played by Jim Sarbh, is the same repulsive antagonist throughout the film. The movie examines how the system compels a man to modify his ways via Deepak's character, who goes from being an honest man to a fallen angel before eventually paying the ultimate price for his misdeeds.
Nagarjuna's Deepak is a few steps ahead of Dhanush's Deva in terms of character development since Deva remains faithful to his emotions throughout. Even though this makes for the ideal hero, Deepak fits the bill for the perfect character arc.
