Kerala High Court to Preview Suresh Gopi’s ‘Janaki v/s State of Kerala’ Before Hearings

The Kerala High Court made a fresh ruling in the case of Janaki against the State of Kerala today (July 2). The choice comes after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) argued over the title and the main character's name in Suresh Gopi's forthcoming Malayalam film, which created confusion in the release process.

At the July 2 hearing, Justice N. Nagaresh said that before he considers the producer's request for certification of the film, he would want to watch it before the trial starts. The bench has ordered the filmmakers to arrange their viewing of Janaki v/s State of Kerala at 10 a.m. on July 5.

Additionally, it inquired of the CBFC as to why the film was not allowed to use the name "Janaki" given the history of films with god-inspired names. The High Court also ordered the DSGI to submit a detailed paper outlining why the name is not permitted in the movie.
Strike against CBFC by film organizations

In the interim, in response to the CBFC's request for modifications to the film, groups like AMMA and FEFKA staged a protest on June 30. This film was not allowed to be released in theaters on June 27 as a result of the board's decision. The creators are also heartbroken by the temporary halt in the release. At a press conference, the producers said that they are proceeding with legal action against the CBFC and have no intention of altering anything in Janaki v/s State of Kerala. The film's director, Pravin Narayanan, argued that the planned modifications, which totaled more than 92, would have a major impact on the plot, the artists' time, and their finances.
