The disagreement between the Malayalam movie Janaki v/s the State of Kerala and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has finally come to an end today (July 9) after weeks of debate and court struggle. The filmmakers agreed to the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) latest suggestions for two changes in front of the Kerala High Court.

The most recent developments in Janaki versus the State of Kerala

The title will no longer include "Janaki," and the new modifications will silence the name's invocation during the film's two sequences. The film's producer, Cosmos Entertainment, has agreed to change the title from Janaki to Janaki V. In addition, in two scenes when an attorney "strongly" interrogates the victim of the sexual assault in court, they have decided to silence the name.

For this reason, the Kerala High Court directed the board to issue a censor certificate within three days of the changes. Furthermore, it has been established that the Board will issue the license within three days of getting the revised version of the courtroom drama.

Janaki v/s State of Kerala's CBFC proposals

The film made news because of a fight over its title and the name of the lead female character. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) raised concerns before the movie’s release. They pointed out that the main character, who is a victim of sexual assault seeking justice, could be controversial. They also argued that using the name, which is another name for the goddess Sita, might offend some religious groups. The CBFC suggested more than 95 cuts to the film to address these issues.

In the latest court hearing, the Kerala High Court questioned why the CBFC wanted so many changes. On July 9, during the hearing, the filmmakers agreed to some edits. However, they strongly opposed making any major changes to the movie itself. The film is directed by Pravin Narayanan and features actors like Anupama Parameswaran, Shruti Ramachandran, and Madhav Suresh in key roles.
