JSK Release Delayed: CBFC Demands Change to ‘Janaki’ in Suresh Gopi’s Malayalam Film

The Malayalam film Janaki v/s State of Kerala, or JSK, starring actor-politician Suresh Gopi, was scheduled for theatrical release on June 27, 2025. On the day of the release, however, the producers of the Suresh Gopi-starring legal drama were in court, arguing for permission to publish the movie. However, the Central Board of Film Certification has continued to object to the use of the name Janaki in the Malayalam movie, insisting on changing it even when the matter was brought before the Kerala High Court on Friday, so it is unlikely that JSK will receive a release date soon.

What issues does Janaki have? The CBFC is questioned by the Kerala High Court

The Kerala High Court examined the matter the day after the revising committee likewise requested a change in the name of the main character Janaki in the Malayalam film JSK and asked for the reasons for the opposition.

"Then how come for Janaki there is a complaint?" HC Justice N. Nagaresh questioned, citing instances of film titles like Seeta Aur Geeta and Ram Lakhan, which no one objected to, as reported by Live Law.

The Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) counsel, though, quoted rules published by the central government. According to the Live Law report, the name Janaki is not appropriate for the film, which discusses sexual violence against women, and the movie can only be considered suitable for public distribution if it either eliminates or modifies the name Janaki.

Previously, the producers of Cosmos Entertainment's JSK claimed that Janaki appears in the film roughly 90 times and that they have no intention of altering it. The subject is still open for debate because BJP MP Suresh, who plays the main role of an attorney, has not yet expressed his opinion. In the movie directed by Pravin Narayanan, Janaki, the main character, is portrayed by Anupama Parameswaran.

The filmmakers had relocated to the Kerala High Court after encountering a delay in obtaining the CBFC license. Later, the movie was submitted to the revising committee, which also rejected it on Thursday.

The uncertainty over when JSK will release remains, as there is currently no agreement on the topic.
