Following reports that it was overshadowed by How to Train Your Dragon and the most recent zombie sequel, 28 Years Later, Disney's first animated adventure picture, Elio, is said to be on track for the worst debut ever for a Pixar movie. Elio produced $9 million from Friday and preview screenings at 3,750 sites, according to Variety. With Elio, which will be far behind the $29 million for Elemental in 2023, the top animation firm is anticipated to make its worst domestic debut ever.

The movie cost $150 million to produce. The Hollywood Reporter predicts that it will debut third in the country with between $20 and $22 million.

Updates from the box office

With an estimated $35.7 million in revenue, Universal's live-action fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon, which was released on June 13, seems well positioned to maintain its top position during its second weekend.

In contrast, Danny Boyle's 28 Years Later, which included $5.8 million from Thursday previews, led the Friday list with $14 million.

The post-apocalyptic horror movie was expected to debut at $35 million, but specialists said it might make $40 million as well. Nevertheless, the movie is currently aiming for a strong $30–31 million debut at the US domestic box office.

About Elio

Elio, who is 11 years old, has his wish granted to travel to outer space and meet extraterrestrial life in a story co-directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina.

Among others, it features the voices of Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldana, Remy Edgerly, Brandon Moon, Brad Garrett, and Jameela Jamil. Not long ago, Disney insiders had reduced their expectations for the picture to between $20 million and $25 million.

Industry insiders were taken aback by the release of Elemental in 2023, but the picture managed to become a sleeper success and made about $500 million worldwide.

Elio is expected by Pixar and its parent company Disney to have the same impact throughout the summer, when kids are on vacation from school. Reviewers have given Elio mixed to favorable reviews, and CinemaScore has given it an "A" grade.
