Dulquer Salmaan Admits Self-Doubt Fuels Ambition Amid 'Kaantha' Release and Legal Controversy

Despite being the son of legendary superstar Mammootty and establishing himself as one of India's most versatile actors, Dulquer Salmaan has revealed a surprising level of self-doubt. The charming actor, who is currently generating major buzz for his period drama 'Kaantha,' recently shared that he still faces criticism that profoundly affects him, using it as fuel for his career.

In a candid conversation with Gulte Pro, Dulquer admitted to grappling with imposter syndrome, especially when taking on monumental roles. "My character's title is Naditu Chakravarthy (Emperor of Acting). I don't believe I'm a great actor. There's always a section of the audience that says I can't act. Sometimes I read those comments and start questioning myself, am I not good enough? That fear is always there," he confessed. This openness offers a rare glimpse into the emotional honesty that underpins his ambitious script choices.

Turning Criticism into Career Drive

The actor was quick to clarify that this very fear is what drives his professional ambition. He views the criticism not as a deterrent, but as a challenge to constantly improve and seek out more demanding roles. “It pushes me to work harder, to take on tougher roles. When I play someone known as a phenomenal actor, I want people to believe I deserve that part, that no one else could’ve done it better,” he stated.

Since his debut in 2012's Second Show, Dulquer has built a pan-India reputation through carefully chosen, acclaimed roles in films like Charlie, Mahanati, Kurup, and Sita Ramam. His ability to deliver nuanced performances with effortless screen presence has solidified his standing, making his self-doubt a surprising motivation behind his success.

'Kaantha' Faces Legal Roadblock Ahead of Release

While Dulquer's performance is already earning high praise in early reviews, his film Kaantha has unfortunately landed in legal trouble right before its slated release today, November 14th. B. Thiagarajan, the grandson of the legendary actor-musician Thyagaraja Bhagavathar—widely regarded as the first superstar of Tamil cinema—has filed a petition in a Chennai court seeking to halt the film's release.

The petitioner alleges that the film misrepresents his grandfather as a man of "loose morals," claiming the portrayal is defamatory and deeply disrespectful to Bhagavathar's revered legacy. While the film's makers have maintained that Kaantha is a work of fiction, the court has issued notices to the producers, including Dulquer, seeking an explanation.

A Gripping Story of Creative Conflict

Despite the controversy, the film remains a highly anticipated project. Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj, Kaantha stars Dulquer alongside Samuthirakani, Bhagyashri Borse, and co-producer Rana Daggubati. The film is jointly produced under the banners of Spirit Media and Wayfarer Films. The story promises a gripping narrative centered on the creative and emotional clash between an actor (Dulquer’s character, T.K. Mahadevan) and his mentor (Samuthirakani's role), set against the vibrant backdrop of 1950s Madras. As the film attempts to navigate this unexpected legal hurdle, the anticipation for its layered storytelling and powerful performances remains high across both Tamil and Telugu audiences.
