The Prosecutor by Donnie Yen switches things up from the intense gunfights of John Wick to a nail-biting courtroom drama. Based on actual events, the film stars Yen as a prosecutor who rescued a wrongfully convicted man from prison by taking on a formidable legal cartel. On June 13, 2025, the movie will debut exclusively on Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium).

Inspired by true events

Acting, producing, and directing all at once, Yen brings his trademark energy to a new genre while keeping the gritty style of his previous action flicks. We follow a young man in The Prosecutor as he navigates a complex web of lies and corruption following his wrongful conviction for drug trafficking. The story takes place against the backdrop of an imperfect court system. When asked about his participation in the film and his choice to multitask, Yen said that in addition to performing in the film, which is what he normally does, he also took on the roles of producer and actor. He has made a lot of effort to finish his assignments by studying up on the film's subject matter and any pertinent information about the profession shown. When directing a film, Yen has to consider the optimal approach to filming the scene, how to advance the storyline, how to make it aesthetically pleasing, and whether or not it has anything new to offer. Additionally, it is his responsibility as a producer to find a balance, and five years of filming is too much for him. This film is made up of four different action sequences, each with its own unique style, he said.

Kent Cheng, Shirley Chan, and Julian Cheung make up the remainder of the cast. The Prosecutor maintains its action roots by featuring four action scenes that attempt to replicate Yen's distinctive ferocity in different forms, even though the plot revolves around legal concerns and drama.
