Years of allegations against Aamir Khan and his 2014 Rajkumar Hirani movie, PK, have finally been settled. The actor-producer tackled allegations that the satirical movie advocates love jihad and disrespects religion head-on in an India TV interview.

Aamir Khan explicates the film's religious message

Aamir said, "They're wrong." We oppose no faith. We honor every faith and every follower of those beliefs. The movie simply advises us to be wary of people who use religion to deceive the general public in order to get financial gain. Such individuals may be found in all religions. "That was the only purpose of the movie."

The movie, which depicted Aamir as an alien who challenged blind religious rituals, sparked controversy among social media users and religious groups, despite becoming one of the highest-grossing films in India. Another point of contention was the subplot involving a Pakistani Muslim man's (the late Sushant Singh Rajput) love for a Hindu woman (Anushka Sharma). Regarding the allegations that this story promotes love jihad, Aamir merely replied, "This is just humanity." It transcends religion. It's not always love jihad when individuals from two faiths—especially Hindus and Muslims—fall in love and marry.

Aamir Khan uses personal anecdotes to support interfaith love

Aamir then gave examples from his own family to support his argument. Farhat is married to Rajeev Dutta, while Nikhat is married to Santosh Hegde. His daughter Ira Khan married Nupur Shikhare in 2023. Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, both Hindus, are among Aamir's former wives.

Aamir answered that his wives selected the names for his children when asked. He said, "My wives have chosen the names of my children." I didn't do anything to interfere. "Husbands don't have too much of a say," or "Husbands don't really have a say."

The significance of Ira's name, daughter of

Aamir stated that his daughter Ira's name is a variation of Saraswati, the goddess of wealth and abundance. "Have you heard of Irawati? It's simply that Reena wanted to say it differently," he stated. He went on to say that Maneka Gandhi had taken the name from The Penguin Book of Hindu Names..

He continued by discussing Azad, his child from his earlier union with Kiran Rao. Aamir explained, "Azad isn't a Muslim name." Have you never heard of Chandrashekhar Azad? He was another freedom fighter. "It's a neutral name." The name also pays tribute to Maulana Azad, India's first minister of education and a prominent liberation fighter.

Aamir Khan's take on identity

In the context of the broader identity debate, Aamir remarked, "I'm very proud I'm a Muslim. I'm also proud I'm a Hindustani. Both of these statements are true." He admitted that he gets criticism from different ideological viewpoints, but he added, "That only proves I'm doing the right thing."

Aamir mentioned his engagement with the NGO Paani Foundation and his socially aware television program Satyamev Jayate as examples of his body of work.

References Secret Superstar to rebut religious aim

He referred to the 2017 movie Secret Superstar, which addressed issues of domestic violence and gender discrimination in a traditional Muslim family, and asked, "Have you seen the film Secret Superstar? What's the religion of that family? So there's nothing like that."

Because of his comments, which come just days before the debut of Sitaare Zameen Par, all eyes are on Aamir Khan's stance on cultural and societal matters.
