7 Years of Dhadak: 5 Movies That Mirror Its Love Story and Social Divide

7 Years of Dhadak: 5 Movies That Mirror Its Love Story and Social Divide

4 months ago | 5 Views

Janvi Kapoor and Ishaan Khatter starred in the Hindi remake of the well-received Marathi movie Sairat, which was released in theaters on July 20, 2018 and is currently available to stream on ZEE5 through OTTplay Premium. By bringing up the subject of caste, class, and honor killings into the mainstream of Hindi cinema, Dhadak had an effect of its own, which unavoidably resulted in parallels.

To commemorate the seven-year anniversary of Shashank Khaitan's Dhadak, we analyze five more Hindi films that, like it, dared to explore love stories that were constrained by society, whether those restrictions were religious, cultural, historical, or traumatic in nature.

Dhadak and four other Hindi films

OTTplay Premium on ZEE5 offers the film Raanjhanaa (2013).

In Aanand L. Rai's film Raanjhanaa, Dhanush plays Kundan, a Hindu boy who is infatuated with Zoya, a Muslim girl, played by Sonam Kapoor. The movie portrayed a complicated, tragic, and political love story set in Benaras, which then took place in Delhi. In addition to loss and longing, Raanjhanaa also illustrated how communal disparities and political ideas can make personal issues worse.

JioHotstar through OTTplay Premium is where you may watch Atrangi Re (2021).

Once again, Aanand L. Rai directed Atrangi Re, which follows Rinku, played by Sara Ali Khan, as she struggles with being forced into marriage with Vishu, a Tamil lad, played by Dhanush, while simultaneously having intense feelings for the enigmatic Sajjad, played by Akshay Kumar. Its lively musical narrative is underpinned by themes of psychological suffering, cultural misunderstandings, and the healing potential of love. The film's main question was: What if the most bizarre love tale actually occurred?

JioHotstar via OTTplay Premium is the platform for Phillauri (2017).

Phillauri was set in pre-independent India and present-day Punjab, fusing romance with supernatural elements. Shashi, a ghost who holds onto the unresolved romantic narrative of her life, was played by Anushka Sharma. She couldn't completely engage in her romantic connection with a singer because of external and internal limitations. The movie's lighthearted and elegant narrative served as a sobering reminder that love stories do not always have a happy conclusion.

OTTplay Premium, ZEE5, and Manmarziyaan (2018)

In contrast to Dhadak's depiction of naive, idealistic love, Manmarziyaan presented love in all of its modern, tumultuous splendor. The movie, which is directed by Anurag Kashyap, explores the lives of Rumi (Taapsee Pannu), Vicky (Vicky Kaushal), and Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) as they navigate the highs and lows of love, stability, and all in between. The narrative raised the question of whether spontaneous love can endure the real world demands of a family, a relationship, and a commitment.

On OTTplay Premium, Kedarnath (2018) is available through ZEE5.

Abhishek Kapoor directed both the heartbreaking love story and the environmental catastrophe that struck Kedarnath. The love tale of Mukku (Sara Ali Khan), a vibrant Hindu woman, and Mansoor (Sushant Singh Rajput), a reclusive Muslim porter, was set against the backdrop of the pilgrimage city's religiously charged atmosphere. The film, which examined the fragility of love and life in the face of social and environmental catastrophes, was set against the backdrop of the catastrophic floods that struck Uttarakhand in 2013.

Like Dhadak, these films explore the fundamental challenges that often go hand in hand with love in India, including forbidden relationships and spiritual ties. The movie is still included in the list of movies that have explored and answered the question of whether love can ever be solely about two people.
