Vaanil Thedinen plot

In Vaanil Thedinen, Felina (Pooja Soundar) and Adam (Madhan Kumar) are in a relationship that seems to be hitting rock bottom, thanks to the latter’s raging alcoholism. Meanwhile Thara (Haripriya) and Eniyan (Shivam) meet at a party and instantly click as they begin to explore a possibility between them.

Vaanil Thedinen review

When Thara meets Eniyan at a party, the young woman looks visibly disturbed and aloof, probably because of her past trauma refusing to leave her. We expect that this past of hers will unfold eventually, only so that Thara gets to be more familiar to the audience. But alas, very much like the short duration of each episode (under 20 minutes), the character too is quick to exit our mind. And this does not limit only to Thara, but rest of the characters as well who seem to come with their own share of past and problems that doesn’t get unpacked to earn our empathy.

However, to be fair, the length of each episode is really fascinating and may easily lead one to sit through four episodes at once. In the sky Thedinen ensures that each of its four episodes is ideal for viewing during a lunch or tea break. However, the series' apparent failure to create a well-rounded plotline also makes the brief length a disadvantage. The four main characters are brought to our attention out of nowhere, and their stories are ultimately divided into two arcs and the space between the couples. However, the end result is two love tales that appear to have a hazy vision, making these people almost as remote characters that the audience doesn't really care about, let alone care about their union. Additionally, the acting occasionally comes off as contrived and unnatural, which makes things worse. We never see what had troubled Thara, how Eniyan's history may have helped her, how Adam acquired his addiction, or why Felina was attracted to such a man. It seems that the paper required more work from Vaanil Thedinen before it was published, and this feels like a significant error that one shouldn't pardon.

In some areas, particularly the opening and conclusion of each episode, excessive amounts of poetry don't amount to much. If the writing had focused more on character development, Vaanil Thedinen would not have remained as distant as it did.

verdict of Thedinen in the sky

The rationale for its establishment appears to be missing from Vaanil. Is it to imply that love may appear and vanish at any moment? Or is love a blessed bottle of luck that is only given to a select few? Or must one endure suffering before reaping the benefits of it? The series, or rather the shorts, makes it difficult to feel for the characters, and as a consequence, Vaanil Thedinen becomes an unfinished project that never fully comprehends its purpose or audience.
