The RajaSaab Review: Did Prabhas’s Horror-Comedy Hit the Hat-Trick Mark?
2 days ago | 5 Views
Following the massive box office success of the action entertainers Salaar and Kalki 2898 AD, Pan-India star Prabhas chose to venture into new territory with his latest release, The RajaSaab. Directed by Maruthi and produced by TG Vishwa Prasad under the People Media Factory banner, this big-budget film hit screens today, January 9th, aiming to kickstart the Sankranti festivities early with a unique blend of horror, fantasy, and comedy.
While the combination of Prabhas attempting a full-fledged comedy role after a long hiatus and the promise of a fantasy-horror genre certainly built high expectations, the ultimate question remains: did The RajaSaab deliver the much-needed festive cheer and score a hat-trick hit for the star?
The Intriguing Plot: A Quest for a Grandfather
The RajaSaab centers on Raju (Prabhas), an orphan devoted to his grandmother, Gangavva (Zarina Wahab), who suffers from memory loss but clings desperately to the memory of her long-lost husband, Kanakaraju (Sanjay Dutt). After learning that Kanakaraju is in Hyderabad, Raju embarks on a mission to bring his grandfather back.

His quest takes several twists as he crosses paths with the charming Blessy (Nidhhi Agerwal) and the mysterious Bhairavi (Malavika Mohanan), the granddaughter of Gangaraju (Samuthirakani), the man who allegedly stole their family wealth. The narrative eventually leads the group to a spooky fort in the Narsapur forest, where the core mystery—involving a ghost, a massive family secret about the Devanagari empire, and the true motives of Kanakaraju—unfolds.
The film's strength lies in its novel conceptual foundation: a grandson’s journey to fulfill his grandmother's emotional wish, layered with a unique blend of psychological thriller elements, fantasy, and horror.
Performance and Technical Prowess
Prabhas, known for his larger-than-life action roles, genuinely attempts to embrace a lighter, more comedic persona in The RajaSaab. His on-screen presence and effortless charm are considered the film's biggest assets, especially in scenes that allow him to showcase his comic timing. The supporting cast, including the experienced Zarina Wahab, who brings emotional depth, and Sanjay Dutt, who offers a menacing presence, also contribute significantly.
Technically, the film is grand in its vision. Director Maruthi's ambition to create a visual spectacle is clear, with striking production design, elaborate sets, and heavy visual effects. This technical scale certainly makes the movie feel like a big-screen experience. The music, composed by Thaman, attempts to amplify the mood, though the placement of songs is sometimes noted as jarring.
The Verdict: A Mixed Bag for the Audience
Despite its fresh concept and the star power of Prabhas, The RajaSaab has received a mixed to disappointing response from critics and early audiences. Ratings generally hover around 2.5 to 3 out of 5 stars.
The main criticisms revolve around the inconsistent screenplay and uneven execution. Reviewers noted that the film, which runs for a long duration, struggles to find a cohesive tone, frequently swinging between lighthearted comedy, forced horror, and heavy drama. The female leads, Malavika Mohanan, Nidhhi Agerwal, and Riddhi Kumar, are largely underwritten and often feel like ornamental additions to the plot, which further hampers the narrative flow.
Ultimately, while the film attempts an ambitious genre shift for Prabhas and boasts a unique story that blends fantasy with psychological mind games, the execution prevents it from reaching its full potential. The RajaSaab may be a delightful watch for die-hard Prabhas fans who appreciate his light-hearted turn and the film's technical grandeur, but it falls short of being a universally acclaimed "hat-trick hit."
