The Good Wife Review: Priyamani’s Legal Drama Engages, But Lacks Pace

Good Wife plot:
It falls to Tarunika (Priyamani) to not only come to terms with the mess of her reality but also deal with the public perception of her family after her husband Gunaseelan (Sampath Raj), who is an additional advocate general, is detained in connection with a corruption and sex scandal case. At this point, Tarunika chooses to return to her legal career and joins her ex-boyfriend Hari Deepak (Aari Arjunan) as a junior associate. The story centers on a conflict between taking care of her kids and demonstrating her competitiveness at the business, and it alternates between family drama and courtroom procedures.
Good Wife review:

In a larger sense, Good Wife is about a woman who has given up her career in order to be a stay-at-home mother, and who is successful in fulfilling the responsibilities placed upon her. However, on a scene-by-scene basis, the series delves into the complexities and nuances of the Indian judicial system, examining the various intersections of the legal, ethical, and moral obligations with a few elements of contemporary thought. However, despite performing its wifely obligations, does the show truly live up to its moniker?
The former's sex scandal video goes viral as Gunaseelan and Tarunika celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary. We see Tarunika leave with her two kids to carry on with their lives, but only after a lot of trouble and debate, he is arrested. Three months later, as Tarunika resumes wearing black robes and joins Hari Deepak's legal firm as a junior associate on probation, we get to witness the rest of the series unfold. Good Wife, to begin with the good, really explores the practices of the advocacy community. The majority of films depict trials as taking place during one hearing, but in reality, they involve a succession of court sessions, follow-ups, and independent investigations. We get a glimpse of a page from the life of an attorney as we see Amrutha Srinivasan play Sneha Merlin, a company investigator (a rare occurrence in courtroom dramas). The series also features fascinating, albeit transient, plot lines, such as when a lawyer requests a break during the hearing to breastfeed her infant, and when Tarunika tells her son about adolescence, who praises her for being "way cooler" than she is.

The series also talks about multiple cases; from that of insurance crime to forced egg donation. But the series lacks a certain rhythm to keep audience edge of the seat, as it merely feels like an arc that keeps shifting its centre point. But back to its holistic picture, Good Wife is all about the case in focus; Gunaseelan’s corruption and bribery, which seems to take back seat now and then. As much as we are made to given importance to Tarunika’s pain of being cheated on by her husband, it seems like the character had given it an easy pass to him who seem to have little to none to make amends for his betrayal. There are certain heavy and fresh issues the series deals with, which makes it wise for the long-form format. One of the sub-plots include that of forced egg donation on young girls, and the exploitation. Hoping for the series to continue if the second season comes, Good Wife begins to get interesting only to leave it mid-way.
Priyamani as Tarunika shoulder the series, as she takes us through the mind of a working woman and someone back to the job after a sabbatical. She comes with a believability, and with a good supporting cast, the performances are taken care of. However, it is the series limited act structure with multiple threads, that makes it a little too much on consuming with no ties at the end.
Good Wife verdict:
Good Wife may not be with shocking twists and turns and that’s okay. It takes its time to do a slow start, and might have some interesting pockets of story arcs. It is a slow take-off, and (if) seasons to follow up can increase the pace, to make things move faster and interesting, then Good Wife can possibly be a good addition to the Tamil OTT space.
