Superman Review: Gunn’s Film Closes Superhero Chapter, Corenswet Trails Cavill

This weekend marks the start of James Gunn's ambitious relaunch of the DC cinematic universe with a brand-new Superman film in theaters. Last week, Superman was shown to a select audience of reporters and reviewers in the West, and one publication broke the embargo on reviews and reactions. In a now-deleted Daily Beast review of Superman, the picture is criticized as the "final nail in the superhero coffin."

First assessment of Superman

The Daily Beast violated the embargo by releasing their review on Monday. But the article was removed by Tuesday. However, the headline "Terrible New Superman' Is Final Nail in Superhero Cinema's Coffin" had already caused a fair bit of harm online before it was published. Parts of the review were screen grabbed and posted online.

The new Man of Steel, David Corenswet, was not treated well by the review, which also criticized the CGI in James Gunn's picture. One section stated: "Superman doesn't skimp on the high-flying action, to a fault; the movie is so awash in over-the-top CGI insanity that its slam-bang mayhem loses its punch. The lovely Corenswet looks the part but, in comparison to Christopher Reeve (whose son Will makes a cameo) and Henry Cavill, he comes across as rather little—a situation made worse by the erratic nature of his tale.

In particular, the review slammed the two-hour runtime for having too many characters and storylines, claiming that it takes up time that might have been used to develop the main character. "In the end, Gunn's wannabe-blockbuster bites off more than it can chew and sets up future franchise installments by way of brief cameo appearances by Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn) and Supergirl (Milly Alcock)." The now-deleted review states, "Not to mention by highlighting second-banana figures like Mister Terrific at the expense of fully establishing the altruistic heart of its protagonist, whose path toward self-actualization is mostly an afterthought."

Superman is defended by his supporters

The review went viral on social media, mostly because of its bitter tone, even after it was removed. However, the critique and the embargo violation infuriated hardcore fans. "It seems like an attempt to bring the movie down," one Instagram user said. "I still don't get this," one Reddit user said in addition. Everyone is now an authority on visual effects. The trailer literally features amazing images in every shot I've seen, with the exception of the one that Gunn took out. The Kaiju sequence in particular has been enhanced; it now seems stunning. As evidence that the picture is good, many others highlighted the other, generally favorable responses.

The Daily Beast's analysis wasn't the only one that was so scathing. "Always knew this would be a hot pile of garbage," one person wrote. DC's biggest mistake was letting Snyder leave.

In addition to Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult playing Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, respectively, David Corenswet is the star of Superman. On July 11, the film will be released in theaters throughout the world.
