In the espionage thriller Special Ops, which debuted in 2020, Neeraj Pandey introduced Kay Kay Menon, Karan Tacker, Vinay Pathak, Saiyami Kher, and Muzamil Ibrahim as RAW operatives working to defend the nation. After nearly five years, the program returns with a new episode. But was the wait worthwhile?
No, the new season fails to deliver on the promise of the original. Although the new season of the program had a lot to live up to, it starts off rather disappointingly, leaving audiences wondering how all the elements of the plot fit together.

The story

Himmat Singh, a RAW agent who was under investigation for his large "miscellaneous expenses," was seen in Kay Kay. The season followed Himmat's endeavor to put together a squad and find the person responsible for the Parliament attack in 2001 and other terrorist acts. In 2021, a prequel series titled Special Ops 1.5: The Himmat Story was published.
With additional characters added, the program is now back with a different goal. With a fictional twist to reality, such as UPI becoming OBI, this season explores the world of cyber warfare fueled by artificial intelligence, set against a traditional spy narrative. But the trailer used the word UPI, which was not included in the program.
Dr. Bhargav (Arif Zakaria), a computer scientist who has the key to India's digital infrastructure, is kidnapped at the start of the narrative. This triggers a chain of events that causes Himmat to gather his squad and start a full-stack rescue mission. In addition to other plot lines, there are highs and lows in Himmat's personal life and bank fraud.

The positive

You have to give it for the effort. The presentation is current, bold, and fascinating. The show's seven-episode format, which takes place over seven days, creates a feeling of urgency.

Despite its redeeming qualities, Special Ops 2's powerful second half is the main reason for its worth. Viewers are taken on an exciting adventure to different locations around the globe by the movie's considerably faster pace.

The show's technological accuracy, which makes it relevant and relatable in today's society, is one of its strongest points. The plot effectively addresses the subject of technology dominating the world and the related problems, like cyberattacks and data theft. Additionally, it emphasizes how contemporary warfare transcends national boundaries, with cyberattacks becoming a tool.

Karan Tacker is seen acing the action scenes.

Kay Kay is used in an effort to create more emotional depth. Menon's personality and the conflicts he experiences in his professional and personal life.

Kay Kay Menon's performance is outstanding. The powerful presence of Prakash Raj as Subramanyam, a former intelligence officer and Himmat's mentor, supports him. He brings to mind Naseeruddin Shah from A Wednesday. Vinay Pathak infuses his persona to the film, making his character enjoyable to see. The earlier chapters were brought to mind by the warm memory of watching Karan Tacker. Although Tahir Raj Bhasin is a convincing antagonist, the plot and conclusion of his narrative seem a little lacking.

Beautiful images from the Dominican Republic, Georgia, and Budapest enhance the show's allure. Neeraj and Shivam Nair are the directors of the series. In light of this, Shivam's direction seemed to be lacking.

Prakash Raj's role reminds one of Naseeruddin Shah from A Wednesday.

The not-so-good

The program has its drawbacks. Bringing in new characters like Vinod and Abhay is a smart step, but it comes at the expense of the original group, making viewers miss the old crew. Meher Vij, who didn't reprise her role as Ruhi, is a significant omission. Although it's too late in the game, the reuniting of the original members is a welcome break from the past.

The show's emotional depth is lacking, and certain plot lines, such as the friction between the characters played by Saiyami Kher and Muzamil Ibrahim, are left unanswered. The plot has several threads, which make it more complicated than effective at the moment.

In addition to being back after a five-year break, the season is also marred by dull battle choreography and editing errors, notably in the action sequences. Although the first season captivated audiences from the start, the second season fails to capture the urgency and thrill that made its predecessor compelling.

Tahir Raj Bhasin makes for a compelling villain.

The verdict

In terms of excitement and action, Special Ops 2 delivers, but it lacks emotional depth and clarity. The show is worth watching for lovers of espionage thrillers, particularly those who liked the first season. It's a combination of factors that may not always work together flawlessly, but it's still enough to indulge in every now and then, like a nice bowl of khichdi. From July 18, the program will be broadcast on JioHotstar.
