Salakaar, directed by Faruk Kabir, is a Bollywood espionage thriller that attempts to pay tribute to India’s legendary spy, Ajit Doval. With a promising premise and a cast featuring Naveen Kasturia, Mouni Roy, and Mukesh Rishi, the film had the potential to be a gripping tale of intelligence and bravery. Unfortunately, it falls short, delivering a weak imitation of Hollywood thrillers like Argo rather than carving its own identity.

Plot Overview: A Familiar Espionage Template

The film follows an undercover RAW agent, played by Naveen Kasturia, who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue an Indian scientist trapped in a hostile foreign country. The storyline mirrors real-life events, likely inspired by Ajit Doval’s daring operations. However, instead of offering a fresh perspective, Salakaar relies heavily on clichés—tense airport escapes, last-minute rescues, and predictable betrayals—that feel borrowed from better-made Western spy films.

Performances: A Mixed Bag

Naveen Kasturia delivers a decent performance as the lead agent, bringing intensity to his role. However, his character lacks depth, making it hard for the audience to emotionally invest in his journey. Mouni Roy, as a journalist aiding the mission, is underutilized, reduced to a mere side character with little impact.

Veteran actors like Mukesh Rishi and Purnendu Bhattacharya provide solid support, but their roles are too brief to leave a lasting impression. Surya Sharma and Ashwath Bhatt play the antagonists, yet their portrayals lack the menace needed to create real tension.

Direction & Screenplay: Lacking Originality

Faruk Kabir’s direction is competent but uninspired. The film’s pacing is uneven—rushed in some parts and sluggish in others. The screenplay fails to build genuine suspense, relying instead on overused tropes. The cinematography and background score are serviceable but forgettable, doing little to elevate the narrative.

The biggest flaw is Salakaar’s inability to distinguish itself from Hollywood espionage films. While Argo succeeded with sharp writing and authentic tension, Salakaar feels like a diluted version, missing the emotional and intellectual depth needed to honor a figure like Ajit Doval.

A Mediocre Attempt

Salakaar had the ingredients to be a compelling spy thriller but ends up as a forgettable attempt. The lack of originality, underdeveloped characters, and weak screenplay make it a disappointing watch.
